Re: Ongoing CBA discussions

So is there going to be free agency regardless of what happens today/tonight?

Peter King tweeted earlier that nothing happens with FA until a new CBA is signed. So unless a deal is reached (which obviously isn't happening today) FA is still off.

Andrew Brandt just tweeted, and I think he is right, that for the next 10 minutes the NFLPA has more leverage than they have ever had. Let's see if they use it wisely.

I believe that there is one exception to this: if the union decertifies, then the owners may unilaterally impose their own terms of employment, terms which could include free agency. Of course, even in this case, there may be no free agency because the owners may not allow it in their ad hoc rules or the owners may respond to decertification with a lockout. And even if the owners allow free agency, the players may refuse to sign out of solidarity with the inevitable lawsuits from players. So free agency in this scenario is unlikely but it could happen.

Cindy Boren from the Post is reporting on Twitter that there's a 24-hour extension:

"Cindy Boren
There's a 24-hour extension on NFL/NFLPA talks, via multiple sources."

I will not be accepting bets on the CBA talks. Current spread is deemed no CBA by 1 month.

Re: Ongoing CBA discussions

I think this extension is a good sign. If nothing else, it's a first definitive step that both sides took in unison. If tomorrow gave us a week extension, I would be more hopeful than I have been in a while. That lets them sit down, and seriously move forward.

^ Agreed. Anything beats a lockout.

Re: Ongoing CBA discussions

From the way i've read it, they just cant keep setting temporary extensions.

Most that i've read says that if they do not reach a new CBA tomorrow, then they will lockout. They just can't keep making an extension....

DeMaurice Smith says, “We’re gonna keep working” | ProFootballTalk

This 24 hour extension is just buying time so they can negotiate a longer extension. No way a deal gets done by tomorrow night.

I don't see a lockout happening.

Re: Ongoing CBA discussions

They better not if they know what's good for 'em. I know I personally will try my best to not buy anything that supports NFL revenues if they screw us over for a year with no football.

Just like the Constitution says "We the People" signaling that the people have the power, so do the fans of football. Without our purchases of NFL tickets, apparel, etc these NFL owners wouldn't have the power and money that they do today. At least not money from NFL revenues.

NFL lockout could throw ex-Huskers for a loss - Omaha.com
Quote:
Adam Carriker always planned for the possibility that something could go wrong, so a potential NFL lockout wouldn't throw him off-course financially.

Shortly after signing a five-year contract as the No. 13 overall pick in the 2007 National Football League draft, the former Nebraska defensive lineman started investing and saving rather than flashing his cash.

It went against the grain in a league loaded with big spenders, he found out, but Carriker didn't mind.

“I'll be honest, I've gotten a little bit of guff from players, because I don't buy the most expensive clothes,” Carriker said Wednesday. “We have nice vehicles, but they're not ridiculous. I don't spend much on anything.”

I wouldn't be surprised if a lockout does occur. THe NFL is doomed regardless if there is another crash on the horizon. Folks are not going to be able to buy zilch in terms of tickets or merchandise then. The owners know this so I would not be surprised if they will cut the season in 2011, then the next crash occurs and the players will have to receive one hell of a paycut afterwards in 2012. The Dow might be going up, and even with unemployment going down it is since more folks are taking crap jobs ir just quit looking for work altogether. Don't be altogether surprised either if a CBA is done, but with the owners "winning".

Just doing the American thing. Coughing up collateral never enters the mind of many average joes in the population, not just the wealthy.

U.S. savings rate falls to zero - MSN Money

Next time I hear an idiot try to prattle about the awesome "innate rationality and goodness" of the human being, I've got a few biology lessons to smash that stupid pop myth propagated by the idiot schoolteachers.

Old article, but that doesn't matter.
