Re: 2012 NFL Draft Day 3

My gut reaction to Cousins was negative, but when I thought about it I realized I loved it for a number of reasons.
The best teams draft purely based off of talent. If we think Cousins was too good value to pass up, I love it. First of all RGIII is injury prone, and a good backup can be invaluable. Second of all, if Cousins is starting material, we can flip him for a high pick 4 years down the road. Third of all, it can be helpful for RGIII to have a fellow rookie qb that is gunning for his job. He won't feel as if he has time to get better just because he's a rookie if he has a fellow rookie breathing down his neck.

Re: 2012 NFL Draft Day 3

Does anyone hear really believe that anyone in the Skins front office will even imply that Cousins will have a chance to compete for the starting job in 2012 or 2013?

Definitely not.

He's clearly a developmental type of guy, will be groomed to be a backup, possibly traded in a few years if he's impressive in the preseason or limited regular season action.

Did they do it with Grossman?

(Haven't been following the media reports recently.)

No. But at the same time he does. I don't care where you are picked, or if you are even pick at all. If you get to try out for the team, you have a chance to start. If you do better than your competition, you start, its as simple as that.

But there is zero expectation that Cousins will compete for the starting job.

Nice. I'll take an extra 6th. I like how this FO trades down a few spots to pick up late round picks and it feels like the usually get their guys anyway.
