So there are reports Romo can return if the Cowboys need him...kinda weird. I don't think he is retiring.
What happened to the two-way "do right" agreement between Jerry and Tony? This looks like some shady maneuvering by Jerry to get Romo to "do right" by Jerry even if Jerry doesn't reciprocate.

Jerry lied about releasing Tony. Then Jerry continued to chase a trade for Tony even when Jerry knew there was no chance of that happening. Jerry dragged out the process until it was too late for Tony to pursue an opportunity as a FA.

Now, I assume Jerry is telling Tony that it's for the best that Tony isn't going to another team because Tony can retire to protect his health (and get his salary and cap hit off the Cowboys books) and move on to a new career. And, BTW, he's no doubt telling Tony that the Cowboys would bring him back (forget about the health part) as their starter if he is needed.

This stinks to high heaven as a confidence scheme (flim-flam) pulled on Tony by Jerry. Jerry just picked Tony's pocket for millions of dollars.

yeah...def shady by Jerry. Keeping him off the market and not submitting retirement papers and if the Cowboys need him he would come off TV and play? lotta misinformation...

Is the league gonna go for this? How does it work against the Cowboys Salary cap? Is he cut?

If he retires, Cowboys retain his rights. If he returns to football, he can return to Dallas. However, if he 'unretires' to play for another team, Dallas gets compensation in the form of a trade.

I think if Romo really wanted to play he'd wait it out and play.

So Jerry gets everything he wants - as usual. I don't understand why Tony, who was a loyal contributor for years, couldn't ask for and be granted his release since he is no longer in the team's plans. Regardless of what Tony thinks he wants to do now, he should force the Cowboys to release him so he can be free to go after another football opportunity if he changes his mind. He earned it.

NFL offseason 1.0 thread

Initially I was surprised about Romo retiring, but it makes sense. The guy had some pretty serious injuries, and he's probably looking at some decent $$ doing TV.

I hear you. But replace 'the owner' with 'Jerry' from your statement and that is what was collectively bargained. The same thing is going on in Oakland right now. Raiders toying with the idea of bringing Marshawn Lynch out of retirement. But then the Raiders would owe the Seahawks draft compensation since Seattle retains the rights to Beast Mode. I do not see Seattle releasing Lynch so he can return to the field.

Not to go off topic, but the NFL players could get more out of their collective bargaining agreement if they would let go of the whole issue of player discipline. Not that I don't think it is important, but the NFL gets a lot of concessions in other areas (including money issues) because a few players make discipline an major negotiation item.

Ok, back to the topic at hand.

Uh hold the phone......

About 15 minutes ago the Cowboys RELEASED Tony Romo. If he was released, and did not retire, he is free to sign with any team in the league. No compensation to Dallas.

Romo can now safely have a 'change of heart' and an about-face on broadcasting and decide to play football and sign with any team in the league.

No scandal? Damn! Well then, it's back to CNN and Fox News for me. Gotta have my daily scandal.

Re: NFL offseason 1.0 thread

Eagles and Ravens make a trade.

Per @AdamSchefter: So here's the deal: Ravens traded DT Tim Jernigan and third-round pick (No. 99) for Eagles third-round pick (No. 74), per source.

I have a feeling that a lot of people close to him were probably trying to convince him to retire.
