Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins at Cowboys)
This "you let your D do what it's doing" principle is superseded by the "don't let your opponent know what you are doing" principle. Considering that he called the SAME play twice in a row already, you DO NOT do it a third time. If the opponent knows what you play is, they'll find a way to beat. Not only that, BEATING A cover-0 means BIG PLAY almost every time.
Also, playing prevent USUALLY results in a dumpoff to the back. He could have called an overload blitz to one side, a zone blitz. An all-out cover-0 blitz was NOT necessary.

Calling the same play 3 times in a row on a critical drive is pretty bush-league IMO.

Gibbs called the same running playing in time after time with Riggins and company, basically saying to the other team you have not showed me you can stop it so I will keep shoving it down your throat. Same on Monday night the Skins had run 0 coverage 2 times with great success, so in their minds they were saying you Dallas have shown you can't stop it so we will do it again. Romo beat them on it on the third go around it happens but it was still the best bet choice at the time. The D was definitely not the bad guy Monday night.

And no, it was not the D's fault we lost, or even that call from Haslett. But I maintain it was a terrible defensive playcall. On 3rd and 21 and protecting a 1 point lead a high risk/high reward playcall....that you have called on two previous plays...isn't necessary and isn't the correct call. Why are you going to leave your 5'10" corner on an island against a 6'2", 220lb WR who is just as athletic or more athletic...when you don't need to? Why not have some help (zone or at a minimum C1)? What if Romo hits Bryant on a slant and Hall misses the tackle, same result. Folks can defend the playcall until they're blue in the face, but it was the wrong call.

Cowboys blocked perfectly on that. Tony did a good job rolling out. Hall did not execute by staying on top of the route. Dez caught the pass. Think there is a lot more factors. If they only rushed four and Tony picked up the 1st, then everyone would be saying "why not send more people when it's 3rd and 21? Then they have to do a quick pass?" Let's not forget their players on the field too. Last edited by Bushead; 09-28-2011 at 06:24 PM. |

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins at Cowboys)
According to Casserly, next year Cooley will be a big cap hit. I hope he restructures and stays with the team. He still has a lot to offer and he's the kind of team player we want. Nothing wrong with having two quality TE's. If Davis were to go down...then what? When they're both on the field, I think if they're used properly and Cooley's healthy, it can cause problems for the defense.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins at Cowboys)
I mean for me the story on Monday wasn't so much CC vs. Davis. It's that with our starting FB (Young) out, instead of going to the proven veteran FB in Sellers we went to Cooley. Sellers has to be on the short list of potential cuts once Buchanon is ready to return

I can tell you the Cowboys C isn't getting any sympathy from former players here.
