Seems like we must not have any room left (unless some cuts -SS, JT were made). With AH here, I think SS became expendable, but JT's play must necessarily get better, right??

Since writing that post, I've realized how they've done it. By installing option bonuses in the second year of the contract, the Redskins were able to cleverly circumvent the 30% Rule. The option bonus doesn't count as salary, so they don't exceed the 30% inflation limit on base salaries.

So, to that guy's point, why would a player go for that? Trust. Dan Snyder sold them on the idea that while the bonus was technically an option bonus (for cap purposes), he had every intention of paying the player that money.

That's why Haynesworth contract says he'll get $32 million in the first 13 months. Notice they didn't say in the first year. He has a huge option bonus put in for 2010. I'm sure Danny has every intention of picking it up; it is clear the Redskins don't expect a salary cap in 2010.

News has already come out that Taylor won't be going anywhere, he'll be staying for the full $8.5 million. That came from Taylor's agent who was told so by the team. One thing the Redskins absolutely do not do is go back on their word to agents. They know where their bread is buttered, they're very trustworthy in business dealings.

Thanks Schneed, for the followup. I had read the post, but thought both signings were about 10mill more in guaranteed money, which i guess equals the 4mill we gained from the bump up. I just was amazed that they could get both done.
So where does it leave us now? Are we done?

I haven't seen full details on Hall and Haynesworth yet. But I think my/CC's numbers are at least in the ballpark. Which means the cap space is now pretty tight. I think we have room for one more guy. I think that guy will be Dockery, as long as he's amenable to coming home for less cash in the same manner Smoot did. We'll see.

It's definitely fair to say that the lion's share of the free agent work is finished.

Suppose that the labor situation gets resolved and there is a cap in 2010? Does the structure of this deal cast us directly to "Cap Hell", assuming we want to retain Haynesworth???

Not necessarily, because at that point the 30% Rule would be gone, meaning there would be no restrictions on base salary inflation rates. Danny would just renegotiate that option bonus into a signing bonus, prorating it over the life of the contract.

Some might cry, "the economy, the economy!" Some think the economy will have a negative impact on the growth of the salary cap limit. But we saw this year that the cap came in at $127 million, $4 million more than the projected $123. While merchandise sales are suffering, TV demand and ticket demand remains high, fueling revenue growth. Recession, depression, whatever. The NFL business model remains strong. Just look how rabid we all are for the latest NFL info.

As long as the cap continues to go up, Danny would continue to restructure contracts in a capped environment. Cash over cap, that's the bottom line. As long as Danny has the money, he'll find a way.

Philly frequently uses excess cap space during the season to re-sign 1 or 2 players, with guaranteed money in the form of a roster bonus (only applicable to that year's cap). I wonder if Snyder is scheming to restructure a bunch of guys during the uncapped season, effectively using roster bonuses that will be off the books by the following season. This tactic would require a lot of cash on hand, but that never seems to be an issue for Snyder.

Kudos for running such a good site, and keeping such a good cap accountant around in CC. His stuff makes analyzing the numbers pretty easy.

Every year the Redskins swarm a pack of contract lawyers on those sections of the CBA, and every year they find a way to circumvent the cap. This year it was done in the form of option bonuses (see Samuels and Haynesworth). Cash is king, the cap is flimsy.

It's a big reason why I'm not so concerned about a capless NFL. We're already operating around the cap's obstacles anyway. Doing away with it just makes it easier on the front office. Either way, we still get our guys.

You and CC do a nice job here at breaking down the cap. I don't even try to sound like an expert, you guys have that situation covered so well.

On NFL radio this morning when they were talking about the deal Randy Cross kept referring to how much cash FedEx field brings in and for the Skins and cash is what enables them to make these types of moves. It was kind of nice to hear someone who actually understands what the Skins are doing and doesn't just throw out the tired phrases of "does the cap not apply to the Skins?".
