Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?

ahh if we get Quinn i'll be the happiest fan ever! SS i'm new to the forum do u have an inside connection to the management of the Skins? Mann if we get Quin!! with Orakpo... don't forget guys.. we still have our 2nd rounder, another 4th rounder for Campbell this year... and then obviously our 3rd to.. so we can get quality players those rounds but we need the BEST player available on the board, for that high of a pick.. I think we need to get our defense stronger in this draft because our D is getting old.. Fletcher will probably retire in a year or 2.. and i've been hearing Mcintosh won't be back next year.. we're already down a strong LB.. if we can manage to get Quinn.. he's suppose to be top 5 pick and has comparisons of Demarcus Ware and Patrick Willis.. Put him on our D and with Orakpo.. opposiing teams offenses will be running for ther lives!! We can get Tyrod Taylor in 2nd rd if we need a stud QB.. and O-line in FA with WR in the FA... and try to get a stud RB?? what u guys think..

Our 4th for JC comes next year. We have no 3rd. I have inside connections (though not as strong as they used to be) through more than a decade of working in sports media. So I'm able to provide info here, I'd say maybe 70-80% of the time I'm correct. Things change. Sometimes I'm wrong. It happens

I know it's going to be a lot of people who disagree with me but I think Cameron Newton should be our pick. This kid has great size, a great arm, great accuracy, and great mobility. The only thing he doesn't have is a lot of experience. If we draft him we will have to let him sit on the bench for a year or maybe two so he can develop. If he we can get this kid to play up to his potential he will lead this team to the playoffs year in and year out.

While the teams with great lines like the 49ers and Browns sit at home and watch the playoffs after sub .500 seasons. Heck even we had a great line in the middle part of the previous decade and yet the best we did was get to the second round of the playoffs.

Either way Smoot hit home the main point. We don't need to spend a first round pick every year to rebuild our offensive line and even though Shanahan has traditionally done it with second day picks the fact of the matter is that we'll probably see as many as 2 major free agents come in here to play on the offensive line. Davin Joesph seems like the most likely candidate.

Honestly though if we were to use a first round pick in the trenches I would much rather go for someone on the front 5 of our defense as those guys don't usually last on draft day. Zone blocking offensive lineman on the other hand frequently slip through the cracks, mainly because they're viewed as undersized.
I agree completely about the OL, especially since we need interior OL, not so much tackles. #10 is high to pick a guard or center.

A NT would be great but methinks none this year are worth a #10 pick.

Therefore I think we might get the most bang for our buck by drafting an OLB like Quinn or Miller to rush opposite Orakpo. We could get our own Harrison/Woodley thing going.

If by some magic Fairley fell to us at DE, he'd be a good choice, too.

what you didn't mention is that he also apparently has great intangibles. From what I've read he's a winner, a leader, he loves to play football, and he has a great overall mentality.

If you could provide some links about good articles on Cam Newton I'd love to read up on him. Everything I've heard suggests the opposite, he's probably not ready for NFL defenses because he's had one good year at the collegiate level and before that it was JUCO for him, and I still have sneaking doubts that he was in on his dad's pay for play scheme. And in various tidbits I've read I feel like he gets the idea that he's God's gift to football. I haven't read anything concrete though but I just have my doubts, I'd love to know what is more factually accurate about him than just relying on various tidbits that I hear randomly. I'm not worried at all about his football skills, I want to know what he's like off the field.

You're right, over the last two years he has proven to be a great leader. This kid makes everyone around here better.

I'm not against picking up Newton. He's the next Vick, but I think he has a better arm.

I'm just worried about if we pick up Newton, and then don't work on other areas of the football team. If we can get Newton with our 2nd round pick that would be outstanding, or if we can trade back and get him later while picking up another pick or two. I would be happy as well.

Even though I really like Kellan Moore, if Newton is available when we pick we'd be fools to pass him up.

I'll pass on Newton. Show me one of these "athletes that happen to be qb's" that has been able to win on the big stage? Give me a stout offensive line and a big ol' pocket passer with good feet and pocket presence.

As for Torrey Smith, he's a 6'1" 200lb 4.35-4.40 wideout who is also a pretty explosive kickoff return man. He had injury issues early this season but rebounded and had a pretty good season once Danny O'Brien took over at QB. Hasn't been the primary punt returner, but we really don't need that with Banks. I think a second round pick on him might be a bit of a reach, but we'll see what people think after the combine. In the video, take note of some of the throws #5 Danny O'Brien makes. He'll be a RS Soph this year. He may be the best qb the Terps have had since Boomer.

As for Dalton:

Bottom line: Overall, Dalton's physical skills might get him drafted late, but I would not draft him. I would sign him as a free agent with the intention of keeping him on the practice squad for a season to see if he can develop. However, in the long term I do not believe he will ever develop enough to be a good starting QB in the NFL and will likely have trouble carving out a long term NFL career.

Not the be all/end all of draft gurus, but they do a pretty good job.

Newton also can throw the ball with power and accuracy. I think unless he explodes against oregon, the risk factor still makes him available at 10. Snyder lives for a pick like that and shannahan loves quarterbacks like that. I dont think he is as much like vick as he has potential to be vince young with a better arm. Build the team around him, repair the defense through FA, sign a slot/#2 receiver like Sims-Walker, and draft OL and Wr's

Agree to disagree. I'm not suggesting he won't become a good qb, I'm just not interested in taking the chance that he won't. I don't see him becoming this team or anyone else franchise qb.

I think a lot his value is going to depend on how well he does in the National Championship. As it stands right now I think we should be able to get him 15 through 20. If does poorly in the National Championship he will fall to the second round. I believe a lot people are looking for reasons to dislike this kid. That is why I'm confident that one bad performance will cause his value to drop.
