Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
After looking at the weather for the area...it may not be to bad. Like 50-60 mph gusts and sustained to 40..ish. Well, if you have a few things prepared, it may not be to bad. Nice time of year to lose power if it has to be. Not to hot...thats a biggie. Good luck to all of you and hopefully you have plenty of chainsaw gas.
And naturally warm beer is only bad when compared to cold beer...enjoy!

I'm tracking Hurricane Sandy from Mars, and so far it's super-tiny and like half a billion miles away. So everything's fine! Expand |

Sucks it is during the night the worst part. You are up all night checking the house; kids can't sleep, power goes out complete darkness, etc...
Groan going to be a long night.

Almost 6pm and shit is starting to get real in DC. Friends have lost power, trees are going down. My mom is stranded in North Carolina since trains aren't running up the NE corridor.
Currently I still have power. I'm in Northeast DC, I dunno how long that's going to last.

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
If your power comes to you aerially via a "Pole Line" with lots of trees in close proximity......Your done as eventually some tree limbs will come down and take out the lines with them.
IF your power comes to you via "underground utilities" you may be ok! If not...power goes out, drink the beer while it's cold or go....native... Good luck...be safe!

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
Got home from work at about 5:15 today, we are experiencing what i believe is a full-blown hurricane. We have sustained winds about 50mph, and some gusts have been above 75 mph, according to the local news.
I got soaked walking around my house inspecting everything. My side yard between our house and my neighbor (who is my father and step-mother), is a small lake right now. We have a tree line full of old trees here, and I wisely moved my spare pickup and my Jeep into our front yard, out of the path of any limbs or trees that may fall. *UPDATE* - I have one tree that fell on the right of my house, by a vacant field, it was small and did not hit anything, but there will be limbs and general destruction to clean up. The wind right now is absolutley roaring. It is even louder outside. I don't think i have ever experienced anything like this since living in Winchester/Stephens City all of my life. And tomorrow could be even worse. I don't know how long the power will last, as the lights are flickering now and again. I have only an oil furnace, no backup heat, but plenty of flashlights, candles, and blankets. I will go next door to my Dad's if things get real bad, he has a fireplace and a basement if the winds get any worse. I have to admit at 28 years old, i'm afraid here. May God be with everyone and their families until this horrible storm is over.
