Patten for a backup RB?
" for an OL
" for a CB
" for a QB

Next years draft will be vital to holding this team together.

I think you are right. This is the reason that I was a bit worried when we dealt the second for McIntosh.

In retrospect, we were probably looking at both D'Qwell Jackson and McIntosh, and as soon as one went, pulled the trigger for the other.

If you trade Patten you risk playing a "Jimmy Farris" during the season. The lack of WR weapons definitely hurt us down the stretch.

You would be robbing Peter to pay Paul...

D'Qwell Jackson = Future star. Just like Merriman only a lttle less out of the gate Jackson may need a year.

Most of these guys are signed through next year. The draft has been a stopgap for several years now. Why would next year be any different?

Of course, last year we had 2 guys that could start at WR at this level. Now we have 4. So yes, we do have a WR surplus, and could deal Patten. Remember, 2 guys already aren't starting. I like to have that 3rd guy for depth. The 4th guy can never hurt, but he's not going to see the field too often, even with an injury.

I still don't believe we could get anything worthwhile for him.

One injury and a surplus becomes a deficiency (See current RB situation).

Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?

But we already have deficiencies at many positions. If we can add depth to our O-line i would be happy. Real depth with someone who i feel comfortable starting. The difference b/w jimmy farris and patten isn't nearly as big as the difference between our starting o and our back up o.

I would entertain trades and if we do it then i am fine with putting espy and farris on this team. JImmy is the man. What ever happened to antonio brown, he is also the man.

Did you see Farris last year late in the season? Here's the thing. Saying that we need offensive line depth sounds good. Who do you have in mind? Another team certainly isn't going to give us a starter for Patten and assuming that we found somebody worth trading for, they would have to come in here and learn the system.

Same situation for a cornerback...

Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?

I think that we have done what we can already. We have guys that know the system. We have good depth at most positions, but not everywhere. What we really need is a little luck in the injury process and enough wins in the early part of the season to keep us alive for when Saunders offense really starts to take hold. If we can keep our starting line on the field, like we did most of last year, we can make a good run.

As far as corner, I think that we have enough depth with the safeties that we can scheme for most opposing offenses (outside of the playoffs). Lets wait until the next couple of preseason games before we start freaking out.

I'm sure the coaches know what they got. They are not new to this game.

Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?

Ohh yeah... No, I wouldn't trade Patten. Not right now. If we get real close to the regular season and some team has a "Jets QB like" collapse, we may be able to strike a deal that makes sense. Right now, I don't see it happening.

Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?

OK, so im looking over the cap sheets and it will cost us $6 million to cut or trade Patten. That would be spread over this year and next year, but still, it's just not practical.

He's only costing us $1.84 million for this season.

Re: Would you trade Patten for depth?

To me, in principle you would look at who you could get in a trade and that would determine whether you would trade David Patten.

Patten isn't a core Redskin in my view, so if you aren't in the core, you are tradeable potentially. The question is whether the player or draft choice you get in return is worth it. And with the cap situation, it would have to be a heckuva deal.

I think that it is great to have Patten on the team and I doubt any trade offers will come along to make it worth it. He basicially was on the shelf last year and I doubt people will give a lot for him. However, I think he is the real deal and with the new offense you need depth at wide receiver all the more.

I also hope Mike Espy makes the team, even if it spells the end of James Thrash's commendable tenure here. Thrash's time has to come to move on at some point and I think Espy is too good to let go.

Sorry, but it aint happenin. Even though I think Espy makes the team or the practice squad, Thrash has been identified as one of the 6 special teams core guys. He is staying (especially considering salary).
