Re: smoot's future

3rd ID soldier -- find me one instance of Smoot badmouthing this organization. When he left DC he actually talked about how he LOVED DC and didn't want to leave. The Redskins refused to pay him (which was stupid, in my opinion) so he went to Minnesota where they offered him a very solid contract.

I'd love to have Smoot back in D.C. Especially with Rogers looking like he's just not quite ready (though I really like what I see, he just needs some more work on timing) and Springs injured/getting older.

Smoot was one of them few Redskins that thought like a fan. He openly admitted he hated the Dallas Cowboys, which in my book is enough to pay a player. We overpay all these free agents like Archelletta, Trotter, etc. Yet we can't offer a draft pick, solid starter, and a guy that loves the organization and team a decent contract because he would be getting paid more than our #1 corner? Welcome to the era of the salary cap, as the cap goes up, so do the salaries. Worst move Joe Gibbs made while in DC was letting Smoot walk.

Re: smoot's future

Smoot just wasn't a good fit in this defense. GW likes corners that are physical and can hit. Smoot is not that type of corner.

Re: smoot's future

Smoot is not a complete corner, so he is not deserving of #1 corner money. If Smoot does not rework his deal sometime in the near future, he will eventually be cut and replaced by somebody cheaper & with better skills.

I was never crazy about Smoot when he was here. I am glad we did not overpay to keep him a few years back.

Serviceable? Yes.

Great corner? No.

His skills are diminishing.
No need to hate the guy though.

I think that's the longest sentence I've ever read. Why are you getting so worked up about one player that played for us two seasons ago? Move on man.

Re: smoot's future

does anyone besides me know what made fred smoot good when he was here? That answer is Champ Bailey. Champ covered most teams number one reciever and that left fred covering whoever else was out there.

I think his "bone head" was the reason he threw the "love boat".

In all seriousness, I still like smooty... fun player to watch on and off the field.

Re: smoot's future

dont get me started on champ overrated bailey. i saw all i needed last season when T.O. walked around bailey like he was an orange pylon for about an 80 yard touchdown. close to mike vick as far as being the nfl's most over rated player

i totally agree with mike vick being the most overrated, i would love to have fred smoot back though he is a product of the system and him did williams system well.

The premier running backs in this league will stiff arm any CB in this league. No cornerback is gonna lay out Larry Johnson or LaDanian. Smoot in our system would prove useful give us that extra few seconds of coverage to allow some of our blitzes to materialize. It remains to be seen .

All I know is I hope he looks like a turd on sept 11th.

Re: smoot's future

Sorry, but I completely disagree with this thread. I thought Smoot was and still is a very good and serviceable starting corner. My opinion, I wished he was still here in D.C., but heck, I also wished Darrell Green was still here (in his prime mind you.)

be that as it may which the last season they were both here i like smoot outplayed bailey but bailey did primarily cover most teams number 1 reciever...so with that being said is smoot minnesota's top corner? i think the answer maybe no

Re: smoot's future

champ is over rated (he seems to figure out how to magically trip on the turf any time a WR beats him).

smoot is not the #1 in minn, its winfield. that doesn't mean he's terrible, but it really wouldn't be worth it for the skins to pay him what the viking were offering, unlike pierce.
