Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
I tore my ACL and had a complex meniscus tear in my right knee playing football with a group of friends. I waited six years before finally getting surgery. The doctor trimmed the meniscus (60%) but said the ACL partially healed itself and he thought it would be good enough if I didn't do anything extremely reckless. He was wrong. Running around the bases in softball will occasionally result in a "pop" (knee) leading to a "splat" (me).
I also broke my collarbone playing flag football in Colorado. About 10 degrees with 3-4 inches of snow on the ground. I went out for a pass, the ball was overthrown and I stretched out for it. After realizing I couldn't catch it, I decided to dive and roll, come up and head back to the huddle. No biggie, I did many times before. When I dove I basically drove my shoulder straight into the ground, heard a snap and a white flash of light went off in my head. The funny thing was I was wearing like 4 layers of clothing so the shoulder felt stiff but I guess due to the immobilty it didn't hurt so bad or feel broken. So, the next play I ran an inside route. The ball was high. I lifted my arms up and pain just shot right through my shoulder.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
i broke my left arm skateboaring when I was 7 and touched my hand to my shoulder with my elbow bent the wrong way... that sucked.
I pinched nerves from time to time and broke a bone in my foot... the bone that goes down the outside of the foot from the pinky toe... just twisting it wrong. ITs called a dancer's break, but I wasn't freakin dancin. Playing soccer I saw 2 of the most gruesome injuries ever, one I caused. Barb high school in lake charles LA was like a 5a team that came down to pick on us. they were up 16-0 at halftime, and coach put me in at goalie for the second half and told me, "we already lost, at least make em pay for makin us look that bad". Bad advice from a bad coach. I got into the heat of the game and threw a guy through the back of the net while he was shooting. His leg hit the goalpost behind the net and snapped. Benches cleared. I felt horrible, though... still do. Then a freind of mine, ricky snapped his leg without contact in a game and I held the IV bag on the field for him... it was sticking out, but it didnt' actually break through the skin... oh, and once I headed a throw in in soccer and knocked a guys tooth out of his face. I got the ball and his mouth and they stopped the game to find his tooth. I played the game with blood everywhere from the gash in my head... it looked awesome... No big football injuries, though...

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
Two springs ago I was playing lacrosse and was right in front of the goal. I jumped and was hit from the left side, I took a shot (missed) and when I landed my cleats planted in the turf with my momentum still going towards the right from the hit.
It was field turf so my foot was not going anywhere, but my body kept moving. I heard three consecutive pops, and partially tore all the ligaments in my ankle. It got all black and blue.. pretty nasty. But recently playing flag football I got a minor scrap on my elbow...I shrugged it off as nothing. Turns out it developed into nasty cellulitis and I'm still on anti-biotics for it. I'll never take a small cut lightly again... My elbow is still in alot of pain, but the anti-biotics are working like a charm.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
I never had any overly serious injuries, but my right shoulder sounds like gravel from the pounding it took over the years. I also have a fallen arch in my left foot that bugs me occasionally.
The worst injury I was ever a part of was a severely broken tibia, that I had a hand in causing by sandwiching a guy between myself and another player. An ambulance was actually brought onto the field. It was pretty rough. |

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
Almost forgot, scariest injury that I have ever witnessed...
During lacrosse practice in high school a good buddy of mine was playing defense and lit me up big time... He absolutley laid me out while I was coming across the middle. A few minutes passed and he started feeling sick, and began to vomit excessivley. We called the ambulance right away and it turns out he had a blood vessel pop in his brain. The doctors gave him a 50-50 chance to live. Some really scary stuff... but everything healed fine, and he's actually playing defense for Navy last time I talked to him. See what happends when you hit a stud like me.... (just kidding... just kidding)

Knocked out during a particularly nasty pillow fight during basic training.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
I knew a kid from a different HS who accidently put his hand through a window trying to stop after running wind sprints in a hallway. The problem was, it was one of the school windows with the mesh inside, so when he pulled his arm back out almost all of the skin got ripped from the bone. He actually had to get flown to shock trauma. It required a bunch of skin graphts (sp?) and everything. He lost a ton of weight and was never the same wrestler when he came back.
I wasn't there for it but that kid loved to show off the pictures that the doctors took of his arm. They looked like pizza without the cheese.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
I've actually heard and seen worse. My Regiment played Field Hockey against a regiment of Women's Royal Army Corps and they beat the snot out of us. One lad had his ankle broken. I learned to treat women the way they treat me on that day. |
