teams only averaged 99.4 rush yards a game against them, so that threory that you need a large defensive end to stop the run sort of goes out the window. Sorry im just tired of hearing that Gaines is to small, he was great all through college. And for the person that was complaining about him not bench pressing, come on, do you really think that matters, just ask the eagles about a guy named Mike Mamula, probably the greatest "combine" player of all time.
we don't have urlacher or briggs, we don't have vasher or tillman, and we don't have tommy harris and tank johnson. look at the colts run D with two light DEs... there's just a bigger likelyhood they'll get run over.

And Spudd Webb played professional basketball, but that doesn't mean that height doesn't matter in the NBA.

There are smallish DEs who can play both the pass and the run (e.g., Jason Taylor). BUT, scouts care about a DE's size for a reason...for all the non-Jason Taylor DEs, weight does matter when you've got a 320lb. guard or tackle bearing down on you and you weigh 60 lbs. less.

Re: If we do draft Gaines Adams where do we put him?

I not all that excited this off season concerning who will be drafted or signed. Apparently it doesn't make a difference, our defensive coaching staff is terrible and I have no reason to believe that it will be any better than last year. Here lately they have done nothing but hold back playmakers; they seem to halt players careers. If they weren’t so worried about a complex system that everyone seemingly has figured out then maybe we could get a turnover.

So, this off season I doubt if I'll be that much excited over whomever is brought in. It won't make a difference how talented they are because this staff will find a way to hold them back, what makes most players good is their instincts and this "scheme" seems to tear down a players' feel for the game and force them to start from scratch. Whoever we draft with the 6th pick, which I hope will be Alan Branch (because there is not much scheme that can affect the duties of a DT);career won't start until they part ways with us.

I'm tired of hearing how this player is no good or Sean Taylor has regressed, our players clearly aren't put in position to make plays while abiding by this overwhelming/overrated scheme that I've never been comfortable with because of its vulnerability. This is ridiculous, ST is one of the most talented players I've seen in my lifetime and when he has a performance like last season, someone should be fired. It seemed as if he forgot how to play football, most of his 111 tackles were a result of cleaning up someone else’s mess. They (the defensive coaching staff)should be ashamed of themselves for the way they made him look in Philly.

I'm tired of this, every off season; it's like "Groundhogs Day"...Something has got to change. No matter how good our off season acquisitions are we always seem to find a way to make them mediocre-at-best.

always figure out how to hold people back? is that why UDFAs like pierce and marshall did so well? I mean, yeah 2006 sucked hard, but they were good enough the two years previous... at least good enough so that we can't really use phrases like how they're always terrible.

Yeah, we didn't yield many yards in 04' and 05', but I've always second guessed GW's defense. It always seemed to be vulnerable to big plays and never forced many turnovers (going back to his days in Tennessee).

I clearly blame last season on the coaches, they didn't work together. I'm not at all surprised with the defenses drastic regression when you hear stories about the safeties coach not speaking to the corners coach all season. Someone should have put an end to this before it even begun, this is ridiculous and it obviously had an effect on the team.

Sometimes I think GW lets his arrogance get the best of him...imagine playing for someone who said that he purposely put his players in bad positions to bring them down to earth.

You can refer to the 04' and 05' rankings if you want, but I'm not saying this coaching staff isn't capable, I'm saying that they obviously have some internal problems and changes need to be made (Lindsay was not the problem). I'm clearly saying that they didn't work well together last season and the "scheme" isn't "player friendly".

Is GW's 04' and 05' rankings supposed to secure his job for the rest of his career??? In this league its' all about "what have you done for me lately..."

Hey, hey, TG, haven't you heard? We are on the verge of signing big time London Fletcher, don't worry about the opposing running game Fletch has got thier backs.

With that in mind, he seems to fall in love with one player and no matter who else is there they seem to always pick that guy, I dont believe the trade back hoopla, thats just not a Gibbs thing, we will pick Gaines Adams, although I would much rather see Branch,Willis, or Johnson in a skins uni next year, getting Gaines Adams really isnt all that bad.
I think G. Williams has more of a say in defensive acquisitions than Gibbs. Although, Gibbs has the final word. Also, I'm pretty sure Taylor was Williams' pick. Gibbs is an offensive guy, I'm pretty sure he listens to Williams regarding defense.

While you've gotta love his speed I worry about him being a bit of a project type of pick. He needs some serious time in the weight room and behind the kitchen table. I don't see him coming in and starting from day one and being a 3-down starter. In his rookie year I see him being used primarily as a 3rd down pass rusher.

I'm actually fine with that if he can work up to being an every down player. Say we keep Wynn or Daniels or both, they can most definitely hold down the fort while Adams works up to starter.

Re: If we do draft Gaines Adams where do we put him?

From Fox sports...

1. Star of the day: Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson
On Monday, Adams ran a 4.64 40-yard dash — the fastest of any defensive lineman, and just ahead of Texas-Austin's Brian Robison. He finished second in his group to Oklahoma's C.J. Ah You in the vertical jump at 36 inches, and did a 4.36 in the 20-yard shuttle, which was third in his group. Basically he made himself a whole lot of money this week, confirming all the positives regarding his athleticism and explosiveness. And he didn't even have to do the bench press, which he'll take on at his Pro Day on March 13.

Adams was already the top-ranked DE on many lists, but like Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas and a handful of others, Adams took the high regard personnel experts had already for him to a new level. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Adams also performed well in linebacker drills. An AP First-Team All-American, he led the Atlantic Coast Conference with 12.5 sacks, and was named his conference's Defensive Player of the Year. Adams thought about entering the draft in 2006, but head coach Tommy Bowden talked him into that senior year. Good advice, Coach!

Where did I read that people who interviewed Adams seemed to think that he lacked confidence? That's one quality that any stud football player needs.

Did it occur to you that maybe the players that made this a top ten defense got old over the course of three years? It does happen you know. In fact, guys like Salave'a and Philip Daniels were stop-gap measures that should never have been expected to anchor the D-line for years to come. Even Cornelius Griffin was had fizzled in NY before having a rejuventation of sorts when he signed here. He's over 30 now, and injuries are popping up more than they ever have.

Last season's performance was bound to happen for a team that was not committed to rebuilding an aging defense. Success in '04 and '05 only further halted what should have been a plan for an overhaul. In 2006, no amount of coaching genius could have reversed those awful results.

Griffin, Salave'a, Wynn, Daniels, Holdman, and Springs are old. There's just no way around it. To ignore this and blame it all on coaching would be the setup for a collossal disappointment.

Re: If we do draft Gaines Adams where do we put him?

btw, i'm not totally against gaines adams, i don't mean to come off like that. he has potential, and hopefully he can fill out without losing his speed and really turn it on in the nfl. just saying that out of these 3 guys, they've all got knocks on them. okoye doesn't really (besides time), but unless we trade down, that'd be a stretch.

I don't know how you pass on a man of his size that can jump 36 inches in the air. I think S. Taylor can do like 39. Forget the weight. He will be an absolute beast. I disagree that he is a project. I think he starts and plays every down right away.

Draft Branch (or Okoye).

that is crazy we could play them both look at the cols robert mathis and dwight freeney they both start oposite each other and they each had 10 plus sacks in 2005 we can do that carter and adams would create alot of pressure and cause alot of interceptions for carlos rogers (if he can hold on to them) sean taylor, and hopefully nate clements
