We've been hearing that since 2000.

Every year the Skins restructure deals, give out new deals, etc., to avoid cap hell.

Re: We have cap room!

I sure as hell hope that's what they are doing. I would like to think so. The way that they have approached Free Agency this year leads me to think that they are about to build a team for now as well as the future and not just for the next 3 years. I believe Cooley and Taylor will end up getting their extentions sooner rather than later. I like the way that they are doing things this year. Hopefully the room is being made so keeping Springs doesn't hamper the extentions of those two. I think Dockery leaving sent up a red flag, a little too late but I think it was in fact sent. Lock them up early while you can.

Re: The non-spending sprees will continue

I don't think we'll have any idea if this kind of "non-spending spree," as you put it, will continue in the future until this time next season.
If the team does well this upcoming season, say 11-5 and at least makes the playoffs, we probably will continue on this path.
But if the team goes out and has another piss-poor season I wouldn't be surprised to see Snyder jump right back into his free-spending ways in order to finally find the quick fix.

But every year brings another year of possible cuts, restructures, trades, etc. So, it's hard to project and say we'll be in trouble next year or the year after. You can't just look at what future bonus' may hit without taking everything into consideration.

The Redskins are masters at manuevering under the cap when it counts.

I'm not worried about any year except for this one.

Just finished updating my sheets (March 8). Should be on the site soon. This update includes everything (Fletcher, Smoot, restructures, etc.).

I had to do a triple take but it looks like we have cap room! I calculate we have about $9.7M in cap space right now. Plus we can get another $10M or so from more restructures. So we have like $20M left to spend if we want to.

I'll be honest this is uncharted territory for me. How are we gonna spend another $20M? Even if we keep Springs, trade for Bly, trade down and sign 2 first round picks, we'd still have like $10-$15M to play with. I mean we don't even have a single player with a deadcap hit over $500K!

Maybe we'll absorb Arch's $9M cap hit after all? Maybe Mr. Snyder will distribute the excess cap room back to the fans? Or will we really enter a new season with cap room? Schneed am I hallucinating?
Seriously, I'm getting woozy!

Now that we have $9.7 million, it tells me that the team is preparing to add a significant contract or two. The team would never want to restructure Portis and Moss if they wanted to stand pat with their current roster. If you're not going to acquire any more big contracts, why push the Moss & Portis cap dollars into the future? If you were going to stand pat with your roster, you'd logically want to let the Portis and Moss cap hits take care of themselves this year, and go into future years in better shape.

We usually only need $4-5 million to take care of our rookies. This tells me that one of a couple different things could be happening:

1) Most likely, Dre Bly is coming to town in that trade we're hearing about.

2) We could be preparing to sign a LG, like that guy from the Ravens (though JLC hasn't said we've made contact yet).

3) Quite likely, we could be preparing to eat a big cap hit from Brandon Lloyd or Archuleta (despite what Gibbs says publicly about them being part of the future). BTW, Springs isn't actually a big cap hit this season, he's on the books for $7 million if he stays and on the books for $7 million if he's traded, so he doesn't factor in really.

4) And then after all our moves, we could be preparing to lock up Cooley before he hits the open market in 2008.

I agree with your analysis.

As for Springs, it makes total sense why the Skins are asking for some kind of cap relief in any deal (as has been reported). He'll cost us $7M whether he's here or not so it doesn't make too much sense to trade him without getting some of that $7M back. We could always make him a June 1 cut and push the bulk of the deadcap to 2008. But considering how much cap room we have this year, there's really no point to push the money to the future.

Jeeze, why not just KEEP Springs and let him play?

Nice to see the cap wizards here and at redskins park are hard at work! Thanks, all--especially CC.

I think Bly will be here, it's only a matter of time before that deal gets done. Denver wants our #6 pick and Bly is the player the Skins want.

I definitely agree on Arch or Lloyd being cut. If I had to guess I'd put my money on Lloyd getting the axe. The fact we haven't cut Patten yet could be an indicator that we're holding our cards to see how things play out.

But last year we were in cap hell, yet were saved by the cba extension. If not for it, we would've purged the roster. Probably could've kept some guys at reduced salary, but a lot would've refused.
CBA or not, I think we'll see a year in the near future where we simply cut a bunch of vets rather than restructure like Tenn. did the last couple years.

A lot of teams would have been in big trouble if it weren't for the CBA extension. If this front office does one thing well, it's finding ways to stretch the cap to it's limit.

By the way, the lastest cap sheets are now up, thanks CC!
