I disagree on both counts. At best, Smoot's cover skills might be equal with Rogers. Either way, Rogers plays the run far better, and barring an injury, there's no way Smoot starts over Rogers.

Why would that be the case? Springs isn't getting any younger and we're going to have to replace him sooner rather than later.

I don't quite understand why some people have a hatred for Carlos Rogers, other than being spoiled for so many years by the likes of Darrell Green and Champ Bailey. Rogers does have some coverage issues, but I'm not so sure those issues aren't the product of the defensive scheme, rather than his actual ability. It seemed to me that last season, when Williams actually let the corners play man coverage, Rogers played pretty well. And he's also one of the better tackling corners in the league; a trait that the coaching staff is very particular about.

Smoot on the other hand, is a horrible tackler. He does have a nose for the ball, but what makes anyone think that the adequite cover skills he had in his first stint in Washington, that have been almost completely absent for the last two season, will just magically come back?

For the life of me I can't figure all the dump Carlos, trade Carlos, bench him? It's craziness.

But when the other team will use many multiple wide reciever sets with multiple guys who are hard to gaurd, relying on quality coverage to blitz might be tricky. Do you think that we will double up on the high quality recievers such as moss, burress, owens, fitzgerald, boldin, williams, johnson, and coles, and therefore not be able to blitz as much, or do you think that we will rely on single good coverage and expect that to work, and still blitz a whole lot. Personally, I think that Williams will try to rely on good coverage, and will not double team many players, and will still try to blitz alot. This will lead to someone getting burned more than he should be and everyone hating on him even though he has been asked to do something unreasonable by being asked to single cover a great WR almost all the time.
Last year, we performed very well vs. number one receivers, even with our injuries in the secondary. We will not struggle this year against No. 1s.

Now against No. 2 and slot receivers (and TEs and backs and just about everyone else), we got absolutely murdered. I wouldn't expect much change in this, except that better LB coverage should take away some of the underneath flat stuff.

This is pretty much dead on.

We know the guy can play the run among the best in the league. He's just got to show that he can cover with a degree of NFL competancy in his third year. If he can do this, he can be a very valuable 2nd CB for us for 10 years.

Re: Playing good WR's

Rogers looked like he was moping half the year, like something was wrong & he pouted about it. athletically he can be a top 10 corner in the nfl, he's looked quite good at times.

I'm willing to give him a pass for a bad year, since ALL of the D was so out of synch.

Re: Playing good WR's

I seem to remember Gibbs saying that Carlos played a good portion of last season with a broken hand (or at least broke it and came back asap to try and help the team) - as can be seen from examples like TO, a hand injury can cause havoc when trying to catch the ball (possibly causing many of his drops) - plus CBs have been described as WRs would can't catch so add a hand injury to that and its not suprising all the drops.

I reckon Carlos starts in our 3-5-6-9 defensive backfield (Springs 3rd overall, Tayor 5th, Landry 6th, Rogers 9th) and Smoot coming off the bench but playing substantial minutes allowing us to keep our top 2 CBs fresh due to a rotation.
