Re: McNabb Briggs trad?
Quote:
I don't think anyone of consequence in Philly, Reid included, is married to the idea of McNabb running the show much longer. Hell I wouldn't be surprised to see Reid out of there in the next few years. Don't get me wrong, I think he is a good coach but in the end they have had SB quality teams, or supposedly so, and only been to one and lost it. At some point they have to decide whether Reid and/or McNabb is the guy to get them a SB. A lot of times teams in the NFL dump good players/coaches in similar situations. They have a good enough front office to build SB quality teams so moving on to a new solution at QB/HC might be the only step to take. |

Re: McNabb/Briggs trade?
I definitely think the writing is on the wall for McNabb. He needs to stay healthy and take the Eagles deep into the playoffs sooner rather than later. The Eagles have shown in the past they have no problem cutting ties with veteran players who they think are overpaid and nearing the end of their career.

Re: McNabb/Briggs trade?
From the Eagles Website Writer.
It started as a fill-the-space "scenario" in the Sunday sports section in Philadelphia. A reporter named Don McKee, who has not stepped foot in an Eagles locker room in many years, if ever, tossed one against the wall to see if it would stick. The embarrassing part, the evidence that there is too much media and too little going on right now in the sports world, especially in Philadelphia, is that it did stick. And now some are actually, unbelievably of the belief that the idea of trading Donovan McNabb to the Chicago Bears for linebacker Lance Briggs has some teeny, tiny fraction of truth. On the record, it doesn't. Anybody with half a brain knows that. The problem is that we don't live in a world where that much brainpower is used. Hey Don, I have to take a really strong stance here and tell you that no team in the world would trade a quarterback the caliber of McNabb for a linebacker. Nobody. Really, it is a completely foolish suggestion, in my opinion. |

Re: McNabb/Briggs trade?
I like Mcnabb. I think he is great in his interviews. Nice persinality. I despise that his mom tried to rain in on his parade(cambel soup) but otherwise I like him alot. but I belive he is washed up now.

Re: McNabb/Briggs trade?
I agree with Matty. This is a QB who has not been able to stay healthy and has played in 10 games or less 3 of the last 5 years. When you have a team that is otherwise ready to win during those years, how valuable and irreplaceable is McNabb, really? I understand he plays a different game than many other qbs in the league, but the guy is just, quite simply, too injury prone to hang your franchise on. I think the chances of McNabb getting another contract out of the Eagles is slim to none..........so why not trade him while you can get value?
That said, I don't think Briggs is the guy that they pull the trigger on.......but a trade either this year or the next would not shock me.

Re: McNabb/Briggs trade?
For the record I think he's far from washed up, but his durability is a problem right now. The Eagles showed last year with Garcia they don't need him to win. He needs to come back and take the Eagles to a level Garcia couldn't take them.

Re: McNabb/Briggs trade?
this is a joke. i agree with schneed. Mcnabb is the ultimate company guy who says and does all the right things. that and the eagles have been to 3 NFC championship games, and 1 super bowl with him. other then the injuries, why would the eagles even consider this? just yesterday in pfw i saw another proposed trade involving Mcnabb, to green bay for Favre. i say no way mcnabb goes anywhere. can anyone even name the eagles starter before Mcnabb showed up?

Re: McNabb/Briggs trade?
I know it's a lame and pretty half assed way to debate, but you guys should trust us Philly folks on this. Probably the biggest reason Dmek and I are in agreement here is because we're both exposed to local sports coverage of Philadelphia sports teams that you guys don't get to see. We've both probably seen the same WPVI (Philly ABC affiliate) interviews showing Reid saying things like "I may be biased, but I think Donovan McNabb is the best quarterback in the entire NFL." and "There is no way I will ever trade Donovan McNabb."
95% of my friends are Eagles fans. Not one of them thinks the Eagles would actually trade him for Briggs. It's an insane idea from their perspective. As Philly sports heroes go, the town LOVES McNabb. They booed Mike Schmidt, ran Allen Iverson out of town, ran Scott Rolen out of town, etc. They may boo McNabb on occasion, but next to Lenny Dykstra, I don't think there's an athlete they've loved more since Julius Erving. Not that fan reaction is a reason to keep a player. But the point stands, Andy Reid hand-picked Donovan McNabb and he still loves him to death. He just recognizes a need for serious depth at the position given McNabb's penchant for injury.

Re: McNabb/Briggs trade?
PS In case you didn't know, Reid has final say on all personnel moves.

Re: McNabb/Briggs trade?
schneed, good analysis. day after day of hearing Reid declare Mcnabb as the second coming of Joe Montana. Reid wanted Mcnabb, got him, and will ride off into the sunset with him, right or wrong. almost like Gibbs did with Brunell. i would be willing to bet when Mcnabb leaves/ retires, Reid leaves the eagles

Re: McNabb/Briggs trade?
I live and work in Philly, and I still say there is zero chance Banner puts up the money for the next contract for McNabb. That said, a trade this year or next makes sense. Not for Briggs......but I'd still wager that McNabb plays for a different team in the not so distant future.

There is no financial incentive to move McNabb from Philadelphia. Reid's not lying when he says Kolb was picked for insurance.
