Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!
Ah, well that makes more sense. All I heard was, "He pulled our player over for not using a signal light."
I didn't know the rest of it because I was half-asleep this AM when I heard it. If that's the case, then good. I just thought the cop was arbitrarily pulling people over for not using turn signals.

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!
I think Marvin needs to redirect his attention to his players. Perhaps a big sign in the locker room that says "NO BREAK LAW = NO GET ARRESTED".......he might have to simplify it a little bit for guys like Chris Henry (perhaps a series of Tarzan-like grunts could be effective), but I think some of his guys might actually get the point.
This is all a sarcastic way of saying Marvin was totally out of line here. As has been said already, take some responsibility. Why would you want to give your idiot repeat offenders an out by letting them say "Coach, it wasn't my fault, the cops are just after us." I'm reminded of the scene in "Liar Liar" where Jim Carrey's client just committed some crime and wanted advice and Carrey simply picks up the phone and yells "Stop breaking the law, asshole!". Personally, I think Marvin would be wise to start every practice the same way.

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!
I can sense Lewis's frustration over this issue, expecially with the scrutiny I am sure the team owner and commish are putting him under given the negative publicity re: the Bengals. I can just imagine Lewis hearing about this from the team attorney....
"What, another idiot got arrested? What'd he do?...A TURN SIGNAL!?!?! Sheesh, I can't get a break. Why don't those cops target real criminals and cut me a little slack for criminy's sake?" Unfortunatly, Marv couldn't keep his feelings in check when on camera and he's now in backtrack mode. Clinton is a player, his stupidity is almost exusable (I said almost). Marv's a coach and should know better. |

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!
Perhaps some of the guys are being targeted. I'm not making excuses for any of the Bengals by any means. But Marvin Lewis is a well respected NFL coach. He's not just going to say some dumb shit w/out some kind of reasoning behind it. If guys are bring pulled over for not using a turn signals then that's BS. I see cops break the laws more times then i can count. Speeding, not using turn signals, parking illegally and so on.

Police profile constantly on traffic stops, whether it is policy to do so or not. Even if the profiling isn't racial, in most cop's minds, the odds of pulling over a blinged out 'sclade riding on 22's with limo tint all around and finding criminal behavior (suspended licenses, narcotics, driver impairment) is much greater than pulling over a minivan with soccer stickers on it. Whether we all agree with that statment or not, that is what the cops are thinking. |

I bet that is what is going on in Cinn. and that's why Marvin Lewis said what he said. Again I'm not backing Chris Henry and the gang one bit. They need to clean up their act in the worst way. But know that there is some truth to what Marvin Lewis is saying. As a matter of fact I would put alot of stock into what he is saying. |

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!
Besides the obvious PC reasons, the problem with profiling is?
Is this not a way for the cops to be more effective with the resources they have? Do they not look to a certain age, sex, race for specific types of crimes? Do they not use these techniques because past experience has taught them it is a way to maximize their effectiveness? Would we rather them waste time checking out people who most likely have nothing to hide? The airport is a classic example. Many times have I seen grandpa, pasty white old guy being searched at the check point. Does anybody really think he is packin' a couple of pounds of C-4, or perhaps it is better to concentrate on those that typically blow up airliners?????????? yes that's right, that threat seems to be coming from middle eastern males. I don't know the answers to all these questions, but this makes sense to me.

Re: Bengals Lewis suggests his players are being targeted by police!
I have no problem with profiling, racial or otherwise. I remember being 20 years old and driving back home from my girlfriend's house at about 1:00 am in the morning. I came upon a DUI checkpoint where the cops had everyone slow down, they looked at you, and decided whether or not to have you blow a breathalizer. They took one look at me being a young guy out at 1:00 am and ordered me to go blow the breathalizer. I passed, hadn't had a single drink, and the cop doing the tests yells up to the cops at the point, "Hey you gotta send me better candidates, this guy's clean too!" And the cop at the point yells back "You said send in any young kids, so I am!"
I had no problem with that because they're right, males age 18-25 are known to be the most careless drivers in the world, and the most likely group to get behind the wheel under the influence. I wasn't one of them, but I couldn't fault them for checking me, just look at the odds. Race isn't the only part of the profile cops should be depending on. Their age, their clothes, the make of car they're driving, how loud their music is, what type of music it is, all of these things tell cops a little bit about you. Are those profiles always right? Of course not. But if they pull you over and you've done nothing wrong, then the worst thing that happens to you is you're delayed 15 minutes while they check you out, and you get to be on your merry way no matter what color your skin is, what car you're driving, how old you are, or how loud your tunes are playing. And if you've done nothing wrong and you're a law-abiding citizen, you thank the cops after they make you blow the breathalizer at a DUI checkpoint, because those efforts are helping reduce the number of drunk maniacs on the road that put your life in danger.
