how about nick"the trashcan"giaquinto, speedy duncan, and of course when joe theisman joined the skins in 1974,he returned punts for awhile.if memory serves me right, brian mitchell broke all mike nelm's punt return records.he sucked at reciever as a redskin, but had gibbs kept on coaching,
desmond howard and mitchell would have been a really great punt return
tandem.anyone remember mitchell throwing that 30 yard across the field lateral to howard that beat the falcons in gibbs last season 1st time around?

Yeah, B. Mitch pretty much made people forget about Nelms...but I gotta tell you, if I had to choose, I'd probably take Nelms although B.Mitch could end up in the Hall.

nelms was good a few years, mitchell was great every year.i still get pissed off cause snyder and turner cut him to sign mr asswipe sanders.
mitchell should be a first ballot hofamer.the only player that has more total yards combined in the league's history is jerry rice ,and brian mitchell is second.i just hope he goes in as a redskin and not an eagle or giant!

I think most of B-Mitch's issues were actually with Cerrato. Either way, he did re-sign with the Redskins last year (or the year before) and retire a Redskin

Anyhow, greatest Redskins punt returner? Darrell Green. Remember the hurdle?

Great return man!! As mentioned he didn't fair catch very often. Some people actually berated him him for that, not me. When he got the ball you always expected something good would come of it. Very much deserved the 70 Greatest.

I agree. Nelms is the greatest return man I have ever seen in a Redskins uniform. Nelms arrived to the Redskins at the tail end of his career after playing most of his career in the CFL. Nelms only played 5 years for the Skins, but he is still #2 all time return man. Mitchell played nine years on some very talented teams.
Their average per return numbers are very similar, B Mitch higher on punt returns, Nelms higher on Kick Off returns.

Career Numbers:

1. Brian Mitchell 317 3,476 yards 10.9 avg.
2. Mike Nelms 212 1,948 9.1

Career Kickoff Return Leaders
# Name Ret. Yards Avg.
1. Brian Mitchell 421 9,586 22.8
2. Mike Nelms 174 4,128 23.7

Greatest special teams coach ever. Those Redskin special teams in the '80's go unnoticed but they were awesome!..
I remember Dexter Manley being on the kickoff team when he was a rookie. He'd haul ass down field and just pummel fools.
RIP Wayne Sevier.

nice guy as far as I can tell... hes always smiling and talks to everyone, even the cleanup guys, and doesn't talk down to anyone...

Re: Anybody Remember Mike Nelms?

Nelms was a tough guy out there but so was B mitch, saw both of their careers in full and you can't compare the 2, Mitch was a game changer, and a field position return man, where as Nelms would provide good field position but he wasen't a game breaker, I liked Nelms but he's no B Mitch.

Eddie Brown deserves some recognition as well, who can forget that great kick return in the rain and mud against the Cards on monday night football to win the game for us. One of the all time great monday night highlights.

He had his dealership until a few months ago. He sold it and not sure what he's doing these days. I have seen him around town (Culpeper) quite a few times.

offiss, i didn't think you were that old. Eddie Brown single handedly won that game for the redskins

You're right B.Mitch was a game changer, but I think Nelms, more than anything, reflected the personality of the team he was playing with at the time and that of Joe Gibbs.

If you guys ever wanted to know what Coach Gibbs refers to when he says a "core Skin", Mike Nelms was it; Wasn't the only one, by far, but he was one of those guys that just showed up to work day in and day out.
