Re: I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled
I had two taken out on the right side when I was a teenager. They knocked me out for it. Also, my mouth is relatively small inside, so the dentist ended up stretching it too far and now my jaw has a weird shift to it and kind of pops when I close it. I also developed dry socket which literally brought me to tears a few times. Needless to say, vicodin was my best friend during that whole ordeal.

When I got my wisdom teeth pulled (about 7 years ago), they just put me under with general anesthetic. What they use, and how they do it probably depends on the doctor you go to, and your insurance. I'm willing to bet that you could find a doctor who will use the anesthesia you want.

Re: I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled
I think my only complaint about getting my wisdom teeth removed is that my mom is a nurse and she controlled my pain medication as such. She hid the bottle like I was a fiend and only ever gave me the recommended dosage. That was annoying.

Re: I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled
I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled while I was awake. I did have the option to go under but my Mom said if I wanted she would give me the money it cost if I could handle it. Since I was a freshman in H.S and didn’t have a job the $220 I could make seemed like a no brainier so I took it. They gave me laughing gas and Novocain but that was it. I must say it wasn’t very painful. But the sensation of having your teeth yanked out with pliers was pretty bad. It felt like my skull was going to come tearing out threw my mouth like one of the Predators victims. Like BleedBurgundy already said the Dentist pretty much has to yank with all his might over and over until the tooth just rips out. It takes a day or so for the soreness to go away but after that it a done deal. Unless you’re really unlucky and get dry socket like Lady Brave.

Re: I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled
I had all 4 of mine removed (2 partially impacted) on a Friday morning in June 2005 and like most people, I expected it to be much worse than it was. I remember being given the anesthesia and for a few seconds thinking that it wasn't working...the next thing I remember was the surgeon saying, "OK...We're all done." The pain was moderate and my face was swollen, but it was far from the debilitating agony that I imagined. In fact, I really didn't even need the Vicodin that I had been prescribed. I think I took one about 2 hours after the procedure and that was it. By that evening, I was drinking a glass of wine and the next day, I installed Sirius in my car and the day after that, I went to see Wilco at Merriweather. Probably the worst part about it was not being able to eat solid foods for a few days afterward.
Just be sure to flush out the socket several times a day and you'll be fine... |

Re: I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled
Well I'm finally getting the tooth pulled this Friday. They're going to give me an IV so I'll be out cold. Shouldn't be so bad... wish me luck! Hey at least I get a day off from work

Jeez, I figured you'd had them pulled by now
Good luck. You'll be fine though

Re: I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled
You'll want to be put out. The day after is never fun, but the good news is that the only byproduct is pain--you won't have to alter your eating habits at all. Plus, they'll drug you up really good so you don't feel the pain.

Re: I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled
Good luck. Shouldn't be any trouble for you.
I remember getting my wisdom teeth pulled back when I was 16. That evening my mom made the family steaks, an extremely rare culinary item in my household. She felt so bad that I could chew that she pureed (sp?) them for me. Instead of Steak-n-Shake, I had an actual steak shake. If itweren't for the nice sentiment I would have chalked that up as one of the worst meals of my life.

Re: I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled
Nowadays they just inject you rather than gas. I got all four of mine pulled a bit ago. The procedure was fine, but I dealt with ALOT of pain afterwards. I got this condition called dry socket, when the nerves in the area of the operation start to heal, but then break if you use your water syringe too hard. (You need to use a water syringe to clean out the area from food bits.) Anyways painkillers didn't work and it was possibly the most painful experience of my life.

And the only byproduct is not only pain. I couldn't eat normal foods for several days. I had to eat softfoods.

Re: I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled
My reward will be plenty of couch time on Saturday for the draft.
Hey how long until you can have a beer? Not to sound like an alchy but it would suck to have to go the whole weekend without having a few. |

Re: I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled
Get a straw - it will bypass the teeth for the most part.
I should note - I'm not a dentist and I haven't had a tooth pulled before.
