I'm not so sure it was a great call. Baltimore would have been a good fit for him. The offense is old over there and he could have changed things. The D is stout (aging sure), so he could have done a lot of good there.
In Dallas he will be EXPECTED to do great. If anything happens, he'll be blasted more so than he would deserve. Sure he's a homey there, and he will be the next head coach there, but what if Wade isn't let go for a few years?

Either way, the expectations are high in the NFL. All in all, he's better off with the situation in Dallas. In another year or so, you're talking about rebuilding the Ravens program.

I guess that is just where I would prefer to be. I'd rather rebuild with my players, than to use the players given to me by someone else.
He's got a long way to fall right now with Dallas, but he has almost no where to go but up in Baltimore, and Baltimore has some talent still lingering (unlike Atlanta). I guess that's my thought. Plus, I have a head coach mentality, and now he's stuck in the OC position for at least 2 more years if not longer.
Also, if the Cowboys lose next year, it will likely be because the offense took a nose dive, so why would they promote the reason they got worse? He HAS to maintain his current level on offense, and quite frankly, I don't think it's possible. Look at how poorly the offense ran at the end of the season. He was getting figured out.

I think one thing we can almost bank on is that the Cowboys won't go 13-3 next year.

Why not? They've got money to upgrade positions such as WR, OL and RB, 2 first round picks in the draft. Rumor has it that they are interested in Michael Turner RB San Diego, they could go after Roy Williams, draft some OL and be better next year. Garrett is a pretty good OC. I wouldn't be surprised if they go 13-3 next year.

Can someone please explain what the hell is so special about Jason Garrett? Why is he being offered HC jobs after only one year as an OC?

I don't like the sound of this.

I wish he would have left the boys. I just don't like the fact that an undrafted Romo throws for 4000+ yards and 30+ Touchdowns out of nowhere the year he arrives.

I could see the Cowboys going 10-6 next year.

Wow! That's impressive. Don't know who is coming and who is going in free agency, don't know who is going to get drafted, don't know who is going to replace a couple of scouts and a coach.

And already a 10-6 prediction. Like I said....impressive.

Because he's an offensive genius.

B-more is due for a major rebuilding process. Not sure if that's the ideal situation for a young unproven guy.

That genius tag would have been removed real fast once he started calling plays for Balt. instead of Dallas.

Re: Sources: Garrett will remain OC in Dallas...

This could be good for us:

1) We'll see if Garrett is really that good w/that older O line & WR's. They will likely draft some o linemen & could make some moves in free agency, but for now the starters are on the older side.
2) If Garrett is indeed getting paid more than Phillips, or even if he's not, it's got to be a little disheartening to Wade to know that your boss has basically set up a replacment for you a year after you tie the franchise record for wins. Seems Phillips should be a ways from retiring, so it appears that JJ might have him on a short leash.

We'll see how Phillips handles coaching while looking over his shoulder, and how Garrett handles the O w/out Sparano.

Re: Sources: Garrett will remain OC in Dallas...

I think this makes sense for Garrett. As Joey Thiesman/Heisman put it the guys a lifetime Cowboy so the opportunity to coach the Cowboys one day as the Head Coach is to much for him to pass up. Plus Jerry Jones has taken care of the financial aspect and right now he'll have time to develop as a coach.

However as a Redskins guy I'm disapointed, I really would have loved to see their coaching staff get picked apart.

Re: Sources: Garrett will remain OC in Dallas...

Personally, I think this is a pretty dumb move on Garrett's part.

First, he had a big year. Head coaching job offers don't generally come after really bad seasons. What if next year isn't so good?

Second, there are no guarantees. Let's say the Cowboys offense struggles next year, but they continue to win. Wade Phillips might get a third year. If the offense continues the struggle the next season, you can feel pretty assured that Jerry Jones isn't going to fire Phillips and hire Garrett instead.

Third, the Rooney Rule. Jerry Jones has to interview at least one minority candidate. He would likely also interview other candidates as well, even if it is just for show... to start. One of those interviews could go so well that Jones decides to hire someone else.

Even if it's for a bad team, I say you take that first opportunity when it's offered to you. It may not come again.

Besides, you can ALWAYS get fired as a head coach and get hired to be an OC almost anywhere. It happens all of the time.

My 2 cents.
