Re: hooked on sushi

I'm in a club and we have a dinner meeting once a month and several of the places have a sushi bar. I have been going on my friends advise and we split a boat everychance we get. I need to learn what he orders because it seem his tast in sushi and mine are about the same. I've tried ordering it several times when he was not around and did not really like what I ordered. I learned real quick about that hot green stuff.

Wasabi is good to go...just don't mix it in the soy sauce.

I know that's the unwritten rule but I do it anyway.

Re: hooked on sushi

First of all, Dmek, you know nothing about food! Seriously, this is the second time in a month you have dissed an Asian country's food. If you want to stay at home in PA and eat Bob's Big Boy be my guest, but if you come after Thai or Korean food next I am seriously going to flip out!

Second, SGG, I went to Japan a Sushi junkie and if anything am less so now, just because I've eaten it 2-3 times a week for two years. In Japan they have what is called kaiten Sushi - or conveyer belt Sushi - which I understand has made it over to the States as well, albeit at a higher price. Over in Japan it's about 1 dollar for two pieces.

People ask if American Sushi holds up to Japanese and it does in a sense, but the one criticism that Japanese people make, and I tend to agree with, is that American chefs don't understand how much vinegar to use in the rice; thus it ends up being like a piece of raw fish on a patty of plain steamed rice, which is not Sushi. That's something I never noticed before but definitely do now. To see the difference go to a Sushi restaurant that is actually owned by Japanese people (which can be difficult to find) and compare it to a Chinese or Vietnamese owned store. Should be a difference.

Re: hooked on sushi

I am a HUGE fan of sushi, but I'm kind of a snob about it (or at least as picky as an American can be about it). In Gainesville, FL where I lived for 8 years, there is this amazing, Japanese owned sushi restaurant called Dragonfly. Their main concept is called Izakaya, which is all about a variety of small, delicious portions. Their sushi is amazingly fresh, and their head chef, who happens to be one of the owner's brothers, is just off the chain. I enjoy the Tampa Bay roll, the rainbow roll, and their signature Dragonfly Roll. Really the whole menu is just unreal. So that was my first sushi experience, and everything else I eat is kinda held to that standard.

Re: hooked on sushi

The best sushi I've ever had is two blocks from my place... you can only get omakase (chef's choice) on weekends and you'll spend over a bill per person. The owner is the sole chef- his assistants help plate and garnish. He uses pretty unique flavors that complement the fish, like jalapeno, ponzu and wasabe (there's none provided on the side for a reason). The place gets fish flown in from Japan every day- including butterfish, skipjack and the best toro this side of the globe. My favorite is the blue crab handroll.

The place is sushi nazi too- 1) you can't use your cell phone while eating. 2) Eat each piece fish side down (contrary to the popular rice side down). 3) Clear each piece within 30 seconds of it being served. 4) Don't ask for anything during omakase (especially Americanized stuff like California rolls, etc). 5) Most importantly, only dip the piece in the shoyu if it's preceded by permission (most of his fish don't need it). I've seen people kicked out of this place because they don't follow the rules... Chef Keizo takes his art super seriously.

Sushi Zo on Yelp

* If you guys don't already use it, Yelp is the best (free) resource for finding restaurants on the web- no zagat payola... real reviews, real people. You can also find the most honest mechanics, reputable dry cleaners, whatever business you need here. That's my shameless plug for the week hehehe.

Re: hooked on sushi

Dude, don't get me started. I love sushi but i am too poor for it. Also the murcury levels can be high if you eat it too often. I probably already am going to get murcury poisioning because i am trying to go high protein right now and am eating 3-5 canned tunas a day. So i might as well go the whole way. I love sea food. delicious and not bad for you.
