But I just had a thought today. Is Clinton Portis really that great a running back....Or do we just use him all the time?

What I mean is, are there other running backs in the league that are as good or better, who would be just as close to the record or even further along, if they were used as frequently as we use Portis?
If you look at his yards per carry he's averaging around 5 yards each time he runs the ball. That is excellent. 20 carries, 100 yards. If a back is only averaging 3.5 ypc. 20 carries, 70 yards. You see the difference? Portis is doing very well this year which is WHY we're giving him the ball so much. Is he that great a running back? Yes, but the o-line is important also.

I think it's a legit question to ask. Yes he's had a big workload, but I think the key is he's making the most of that workload. He's averaging 5.0 yards per pop, and 5 straight games of at least 120 yards is pretty damn impressive. He's averaging 118 per game, nobody even comes close to that.

If he was only getting 3.5 - 4.0 per carry I think your argument would carry more weight.

The Skins have leaned on him hard, but he's delivering.

Should Brees not be considered because they throw all the time?

Lets hope he continues this great stretch of games, even if it is on one knee sometimes haha. Good read.

Clinton is playing great and you guys should be proud but Drew Brees ,Kerry Collins, the Kid in Atlanta also desereve a look at.

Brees yes, but Collins? You are kidding. He's doing a fine job keeping the ship steady but he is very much the beneficiary of a strong D and running game. Were it not for Mannings INT's Monday night, the Titans could easily have had their first loss.

And Ryan? Again, where would he be without his running game? Maybe if he'd won last week I'd give that suggestion more credence. The kid is playing great, but MVP? Nope.

I'd rank Campbell above both of them, even with his fumbles and I don;t think he's close to MVP.

My top 5 so far:

Portis
Brees
Joey Porter
Fitzgerald
Haynesworth

Maybe Rivers if SD can start winning again - the losses aren't his fault.

Pretty solid list. I'd put Cambpell in there somewhere. Larry Fitzgerald doesn't even lead his own team in TD catches, so I have hard time giving it to him, although he is a fantastic player. Haynesworth is just a freak.

Joey Porter has 10.5 sacks in 7 games. That's nuts. Where the hell did he come from this year? Talk about a renaissance. If he keeps up that pace he'll set the single season record with 24 sacks. At the very least deserving of defensive MVP.

Re: Portis MVP Midway Through

Probably the reason that Portis may be questioned as not as great as he is, he hasn't had a lot of the 30, 40, 50 yard scoots to the end zone as some other guys. He's not quite as "Sportscenter" here with our team.

Anyone listen to Mike and Mike this morning? This shocked me to even hear JC being considered, but Jaws and Mel Kiper both say that JC is the MVP so far this year.

Re: Portis MVP Midway Through

Campbell is playing really well. Not flashy, but a rating over 100, zero INTs, a few second half come from behind victories and a 6-2 record will get you some consideration I guess. Jaws has always been a big fan of JC. I can't wait to hear him on Monday night.

Happy Halloween everyone.
