Re: It's amazing how stupid some people are
Well I think that all depends on what they were fighting over.

Re: It's amazing how stupid some people are
I was at a kroger gas station yesterday and a old couple pulled up at the same time as me, they were on the other side of the pump so I could hear everything they talked about. So they couldn’t figure out how to swipe their Kroger card to get I think 10 cents off gas. Then they couldn’t figure out how to use their credit card to pay for the gas. Apparently paying at the pump prior to filling up is inconceivable to some people. They had to get the gas attendant both times to help them.
When i first heard them having trouble trying to swipe their Kroger card I was about to go over and help them, but just listening to them think it out was too hilarious for me to go over. We both started at the same time, I filled up 14+ gallons and drove away the second time they got the attendant out to help them with their credit card. Im actually really glad I didn’t help them, because I was in a rush and flat out didn’t have time to deal with their incapabilities. Once I saw this thread it made me immediately think of TTE. So I started thinking can you consider old people (75+) stupid? I mean if it wasn’t for the fact these people were old you would think it was a retarded kid trying to fill up his mom’s car. It didn’t seem like dementia or anything. It just seemed like these old people just had a significant diminished mental capacity. |

Re: It's amazing how stupid some people are
Yeah thats the way ive always felt, but ive never really thought about it or tried to equate old people's mental inabilities before with anything. I just look at it like "oh, their old". But obviously their not nearly as smart as they once were.

Quote:
People often fear that aging will cause their intellect to disappear, giving way to cognitive impairment and irrationality. However, intellectual decline is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Research does not support the stereotypic notion of the elderly losing general cognitive functioning or that such loss, when it does occur, is necessarily disruptive. Older adults tend to learn more slowly and perform less well on tasks involving imagination and memorization than do younger adults, but what older adults may be lacking in terms of specific mental tasks, they make up for in wisdom, or expert and practical knowledge based on life experience.

Re: It's amazing how stupid some people are
I feel like you can replace wisdom with "stories" in every occurance in that psychology link.....
I talked about this a little bit with my boss (65) who has a intense personal interest in human psychology. He told me about: Fluid and crystallized intelligence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I completely agree with both things; wisdom and fluid & crystallized intelligence and i think there are different types of smarts (street, book, football), but at the end of the day I don’t think any of us would trade fluid intelligence for crystallized intelligence or wisdom. And I would think most of our parents, grandparents, other old people in our life would gladly trade some ingenuity for their old fashion know how. |

Re: It's amazing how stupid some people are
I find it interesting that anyone would equate being old with being stupid. They are two very different things. Just because they are confused by technology doesn't mean they're dumb. That seems like a very small minded equation. I work with elderly people, and have done so everyday for many years. Believe me they aren't dumb.
