Haha my mom was so tiny she couldn't hurt us if she wanted to, so she developed a killer look to get us in shape.

Spanked! shooot I got whipped you name it I was hit with it. Shoes, 2x4, a frying pan, paddle, belt with the buckle end, and a bunch of others. I also have gotten hot habanero sauce in the eye and whipped naked.

But I have no problem with spanking

Shameless self-promotion. It is what it is.

lol that's like bordering on child abuse? Shoes maybe. Paddle and belt I can get but a frying pan? Come on now.

I would only use spanking as an absolute last resort, depending on the situation. I'm a psychology major and time and time again teachers have told me what a detriment it is to spank your kids. Well I think it's a fine line you straddle between disciplining your kid with spanking and just hitting them because you're angry. I figure if you can spank effectively and its not you just lashing out at your kids cause you're stressed out, then spank them. It works if you know what you're doing. (I'm a product of it)

Personally I can't stand it when I see parents strong-arming their kids in the middle of a public area. Obviously you're not supposed to let the kid wild out but there are better ways to control your kid then dragging them and pulling them around by the arm. Pisses me off.

I was spanked as a kid but only my grandmother did it effectively to prove a point that I was being disciplined for doing something wrong and to command respect, thus as an adult, I respect my grandmother to the fullest.

My mom on the other hand liked to spank me in for.. Well.. Just being a kid. If I accidentally broke something or knocked over a drink. I'd get yelled at or potentially hit depending on where we were. She was also the strong-arming type in being that I would get yanked around if I wasn't moving at a speed that she wanted to, or if I was lagging behind, or her favorite thing for yanking me around for: roughhousing because it wasn't ladylike.

I'll never forget when I was in middle school and went to a bat mitzvah for a friend, I guess I was around 12 or 13. We were walking from the temple to the dining hall which was outside and i fell (don't ask how) and ripped a hole in the knee of my tights. Well I went to the bathroom to clean up and figured it's a ****ing big hole in the knee, they're no good now so I took them off and tossed them. At the end of the night when my mom realized I wasn't wearing them and asked what happened to them, I told her I got a run in them and threw them away and she backhanded me right in the car.

Needless to say, I love my mom but I don't like who she is as a person.

Nothing wrong with a swipe on the rearend. dont do it out of anger and make sure they know why they are in trouble. Most of the time they know already.
SO This is what the USA has turned into? A woman spanks her child and makes nationwide news/headlines.. I hate to say it but it seems like we are becoming a bunch of pansies.
Prez kills a fly and makes front page. OMG,really??

I know what you mean.

The other thing that bothers me is when people get huffy about a woman breastfeeding their baby in public. Really? 9 times out of 10 they cover up so no one can see them and still people wanna make a big stink about it.

Re: ok to spank your child?

I can see it as an act to quickly get your child into the right gear so to speak. Like one firm smack to the ass or something to be like "Hey, I'm being serious here!" Or when a child doesn't quite understand verbal comments and you give them a slight rap to the wrist/hand to explain that it's a no no.

I don't see smacking a child out of anger a correct form of punishment, it seems like such a last resort option, or more one exercised when you're too lazy to find an appropriate way to reach out to your child and correct his or her behavior. Oftentimes it does seem to be done out of instant anger. Has society evolved so little that we still have to resort to physicality to settle differences? It's accepted in no other form than raising a child for some reason. No longer can two men engage in fisticuffs to settle an argument, but go ahead and smack your child across the mouth to teach him a lesson? You can't even spank your dog for doing bad stuff anymore without having people all up in your ass and children tend to understand much better than animals (though you do have the excuse of children being more active members of society than a dog that is given the excuse).

I've just seen spanking and other physical punishment go way too far, both in my own experiences and others and I've never seen it work. I've heard all of the baby boomers use the excuse that they were spanked or smacked across the mouth and they turned out fine. Yeah, they also turned out having an extremely high rate of them bipolar, on mood stablizing medicines, abusing their children, killing their children, etc. I'm not saying John Doe murdered his family because he got spanked a few times from being bad, just that often times a spanking isn't necessary. Can we really not find an appropriate way to express our dissatisfaction with a child's behavior and settle them than to resort in inflicting pain on them? If not it truly is sad.

It's funny and frustrating at the same time that whenever I go to spank one of my children and they know that it's coming, they try to shield their bottoms with their hands. Then you have to use the extra effort just to move their hands out of the way just to pop them. There is a form of comfort that I take away from them shielding their backsides though, it assures me that I am in fact spanking my kids and not beating them. If I was they beating them, they would be shielding more than their buttocks.
This is also sensible and I can follow your logic. Each person has to be viewed individually on the subject as some can dish it responsibly and some can't. I'll just likely avoid it as much as possible, but not a daddy yet so we'll see.
