Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

I doubt Joe Gibbs would be as involved as Parcells is. I'm thinking he'd be closer to a Joe Banner or Amy Trask or Ted Phillips.

If you don't know who any of those people are, that's because they aren't really known as "franchise runners". But they all basically serve as the president of different football franchises (Eagles, Raiders, Bears).

Parcells and Ireland, on the other hand, make business decisions jointly. Really doubt that would be the case here.

Plus, didn't he already right the ship here once?

I would like this move, IF Joe Gibbs doesn't have full control of picking players. He's not bad, but he puts too high of an emphasis on veteran players, and I think that's a big part of the reason we're in the situation we're in now. We went for older vets instead of grooming younger guys.

Agreed. GIbbs has absolutely no experience as a GM. As long as the deal included Gibbs hiring a professional GM, doesn't seem like a bad idea. For Snyder, Gibbs is a way to paving the wounds with fans.

I know, I wasn't thrilled with his talent evaluating either. His love for small recievers kills me too. If it is true I hope that he can get past the "Smurfs" among other things.

If done it needs to be in Gibbs control. Meaning Snyder steps away and lets Gibbs run the team. Gibbs picks out the GM, Coach, etc... Gibbs is great at putting teams together. Look at Nascar and what he done here. Snyder will not let that happen though. If done it would be the best way we could get a credible coach in. If not we will continue to be the laughing stock of the NFL.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

I've been a longtime reader of the forums here and just today joined because I couldn't hold my tongue any longer.

I've been a fan since the 60s and have seen some horrible teams, but this season takes the cake. The Snyder/Cerrato admin is a total joke, not just in Washington but across the league.

To respond to this thread, I would say that this would be a positive step. Gibbs may be the only person that the Danny would take a backseat to, just out of pure reverence. But all the talk and speculation about who our new coach should be is a waste of time. We should be speculating on who our new GM will be. Personally, I would like to see Bobby Beathard come back, but I think DS dissed him in some way when he first bought the team. The new GM will be the one to make the coaching, scouting, personnel and team admin decisions (as it should be). Gibbs wouldn't take that role, but he MAY be able to get DS to hire the right guy and to get his nose the hell OUT of football operations completely.

Mr. Snyder, if this gets to you at all, Please do the right thing and stick to what your good at. Market the Redskins! Let those you delegate to actually run the football ops do what their good at...and don't ever let the two ends of the spectrum cross again.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

Obviously, Gibbs 2.0 wasn't very successful. He struggled to adapt to the faster speed of the game and was a bit "overzealous" in free agency.

However, one thing Joe Gibbs did well when he came here was assembling an elite coaching staff. Generally, speaking, he acquired high-quality, high character people on his staff and team.

One thing Joe Gibbs was always good at, and is still good at, is judging the character of men. He also has the undying respect and admiration of Dan Snyder, something we cant say about anyone else Snyder has ever hired. If Gibbs speaks, Snyder listens.

Thats all Gibbs would really be doing if the rumor is true - selecting a high quality coach and a high quality GM, and then "managing" Snyder so he doesn't interfere too much and screw things up. I don't see how anyone could not want Gibbs here in THAT role.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

I think the question is will Gibbs be brought in to win NOW or REBUILD? If DS wants to win next year same thing will happen, but if the goal is to be a contender in the next 3 to 4 years I'm all for it.

I'd somewhat disagree with "he's not bad". The only ones that he really 100% hit on during his tenure were Cooley & Taylor. Rogers, Campbell, Golston, Doughty, McIntosh are all contributors but are not elite at their positions. He's a bad personnel guy, I'd rather he not have any hand in choosing players at all.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

If Snyder is so hell bent on bringing back old Skins staff to get back in the good graces of the fans why doesn't he bring Casserly back as GM?

Maybe because he knows Casserly wouldn't keep Vinny around. This all looks like Snyder is struggling to find any way for Cerrato to stay on board and have fans be fine with it.

Thats a much better comparison to what I think PFT was referring to than Parcells.

As long as Gibbs brings in some QUALIFIED people to run things and Snyderatto stay out of the way then I don't have a problem with this.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

And another thing, why wait til the end of the season to hire a GM??? Get him in here now to get a head start on next season. It takes time to build a scouting staff and scout players before the draft. Why put it on a short-track by signing someone in January.

As much as I love Joe Gibbs, I have to agree with you. Some of his GM like decisions were questionable at best, but a man of his integrity is an asset in just about any position he could be in your employ. Maybe he could resume his title as team president, hire a competent GM and go from there. I'm convinced having worked for Jack Cooke he knows how a team should be constructed.
