Re: The Official Lost: The Final Season Thread (Warning: Possible Spoilers)

my main gripe with the episode, but articulated much better, is mirrored here:

Marc Oromaner’s Lost In Myth: “Ab Aeterno”-Cadabra! And the Island Is…A Cork?? DocArzt's LOST Blog

Quote:
While cynical viewers have assumed for some time that the creators of Lost were going to pull a solution out of their collective ass, not even the most pessimistic among them ever mentioned that theyd be pulling out a cork. While I still have faith that there is still something more interesting going on, Ab Aeterno gave me a bit to be concerned about. Sure, the story itself was intriguing and many answers were revealed. But those answers were less than spectacular. And given that all those answers were dreamed up in the early seasons it got me thinking, what if all the answers to this brilliant show are just really dull?

What if the ghosts seen on the island are actually, well, ghostsor an impersonation by the black smoke thingie? What if the whispers are just the voices of those ghosts? What if that black smoke thingie is just some sort of evil entity trapped on the island? What if the numbers are just random numbers assigned by a god-like being named Jacob to find his replacement? What if Richard Alpert hasnt aged simply because he asked for it and Jacob touched him? What if the Black Rock got to the middle of the island because Jacob caused a giant storm wave to bring it there? What if doing this caused the four-toed statue to topple? And what if the island really is nothing more than a metaphorical cork in a bottle to contain the black smoke thingie? In other words, what if the answers to Lost all turn out to be the stuff of Deus Ex Machina?
Even the worst season of Lost trumps anything else out there on network TV. however, after the truly ingenious season's 4 and 5 of the show, i've come to expect more of the show. Hopefully, the writer of the article is right, and there is more to it. his theory is pretty sweet. the article is definitely worth a read.

Re: The Official Lost: The Final Season Thread (Warning: Possible Spoilers)

The last episode has been the only I've liked from this last season after the huge end of last season I expected more of this one... I hated the stupid beginning with the people in the temple the (other/Others) that somehow nobody had seen before there was no need to introduce new people into the story and to kill them after 4 episodes what was the real point to that.

This last episode was great and long overdue the story about Richard we all wanted to see it ... the only thing I didn't like about the episode it's how the writes tried to tie things up in the story that had no sense what soever... In the end of 2 season ago when we first see Jacob sitting at the beach with the dark smoke we see the ship where Richard comes but it's day and clear sky and now the writers changed it to a perfect storm.

Not only that they crash the ship into the 100 feet statue to explain how it ended being a foot how big the freaking wave had to be for the ship to hit it straight in the face and what type of wood that ship was made that could destroy a statue of solid rock???? also after the ship hit the statue somehow it ends up in the middle of the Jungle??????

Hate when writers try to sell you salt as sugar and expect u to eat it with a smile.

Re: The Official Lost: The Final Season Thread (Warning: Possible Spoilers)

It's kind of lame to overanalyze everything the show has ever done because for a while they were writing the story without an end date in mind. Once an end date was set the writers got the chance to really formulate a solid story. But you can't expect every loose end to make sense because for a while the writers didn't have solid direction from the network.

Just enjoy the story for what it is and don't knitpick.

Reminds me of an episode in Scrubs.

My take is that it while it was The Black Rock, it could have been sitting offshore for whatever reason during the day only to have the massive storm pick up that night. We've seen plenty of instances on the show where the weather changes from one second to another.

Re: The Official Lost: The Final Season Thread (Warning: Possible Spoilers)

no that wouldnt work - richard and the other slaves didnt see the island or the statue until nighttime during the storm. if the black rock was sitting there all day, they wouldn't have been so excited to see land during the storm.

the fish jacob caught and ate during the opening scene of the season 5 finale was a red herring. something in that scene was not as it seemed. the most likely possibilities are that 1) the man we know as Jacob is not good and the MIB is not bad or 2) it wasn't the black rock.

This discussion reminds me of the M*A*S*H episode where a mystery book is received at mail call, everyone reads it, but the last pages are missing so people are trying to solve it, and each idea gets shot down.

Ok, well a red herring is not an actual fish, but I understand what you're saying. I agree that the props people probably used a red fish specifically for that purpose to make people think that.

But you're making assumptions that the ship shown during the day wasn't the Black Rock because Richard and the other slave would have seen the island and therefore not been so surprised at night. So if you can make that assumption then I can make the assumption that it was the Black Rock and they couldn't see the island from where they were on the ship. Perhaps Richard was on the right side of the ship and the island was only visible from the left side during the day. Or maybe the freaky island that can travel through time and jumps from place-to-place couldn't be seen at that time because so something Jacob was doing to cloak it from sight until the time was right.
As much as I love this show, and I am way too obsessed with it at times, I will admit that there have been tons of continuity errors so I really wouldn't put be surprised if the ship was supposed to be the Black Rock and the writers didn't care enough to make the two episodes completely match-up, which goes back to your lazy writing argument that I agree with.
In the end I don't think it matters because as Jacob said, he's been bringing people to the island for a long time.

Now, if they don't bring back Walt in some way and explain why he was kidnapped (basically THE major plot point of the second season) I am really going to be pissed. Unfortunately at this point I'm starting to prepare myself for some major disappointment.

this is the most likely answer. i just dont think that the writers figured out how they wanted the statue to be destroyed or how the black rock would get to the middle of the island when they shot season 5 finale scene. even lazier of the writers was setting the episode in 1867. in a previous episode, when desmond interrupted an auction for the ledger of the black rocks first mate. the ship supposedly went missing in 1845 and the ledger was discovered in 1852. the show employs a number of people whose one and only job is to ensure continuity errors on the show. it baffles me how they could screw up something so basic. you'd think theyd have some sort of timeline they were working off of.

Unfortunately my nerdy pursuit has been taken away by the expiring CBA. Maybe I should nerd it up with you guys in over-analyzing Lost.

But seriously, isn't analyzing the writing a giant waste of time? Do you really think the writers care to be bothered with such minute details and consistencies that you guys are pointing out? You just gotta step back and ask yourself if those inconsistencies are likely to affect the show's viewership. If the answer is no, then they shouldn't worry about it.
