Re: Merriman goes to IR

If he’s healthy I would defiantly take a look at it. I think Shanahan could keep him in check. The guy was a beast and I don’t think was only because of HGH.

Re: Merriman goes to IR

Can he be worse than Andre Carter at LB?
Guy is great as a pss rushing End,but can't cover in the 3-4 to save his life.

I believe that was one of merriman's strengths.
Yes,he's a sack machine (or was in 05,06 and 07...but i believe he can cover fairly well)

We are now a 3-4 team and we need to do everything we can to have the absolute best 4 LB's on the field at the same time.

Remember the Saints when they had Sam Mills,Ricky Jackson, Vaugh Johnson and Pat Swilling.
Hell, they had their own knickname called "The Dome Patrol"

We have that in Orakpo
McIntosh can certainly be a part of this as well. He's playing very well.
Love Fletcher, but how long does he have..1 yr..maybe 2? (We need to find his replacement)
Alexander is great, but for how long...the dude was an O-lineman and D-Lineman.

Merriman is only 26...but maybe his HGH was why he was good..who knows?
But if he can be had for cheap...You have to at least inquire about it imo...

Yeah Carter is the first one i thought about. This is definitly Carter's last year in DC unless we switch back to a 4-3, he made a no-trade clause for a reason - so that he can pick where he wants to be and it aint here anymore. Carter hasnt really been playing much after Houston this season anyways.

I dont see anyreason not to persue Merriman, were in a new system and any vet that can fit in the role should be considered.

Even if we were to switch back to 4-3, which will not, it is time to get rid of Carter. In the 4-3 Carter was a liability in the running game against power running teams that had a strong OT. Only good at rushing the passer. That is all.

Well, strong against the run in a one-gap scheme, but the wider that gap is, the more likely Carter always was to miss his responsibility on counter/cutback/reverse action. It really was something teams have schemed against him for a long time.

Carter has always been a tough guy to block. Too quick for tackles, too strong for tight ends.

Valuable player as long as he still has his pass rushing skills, but he's at the age where pass rushers decline. He's a below average player if you sap away his speed rushing ability.

Re: Merriman goes to IR

For "only" 26 he seems awfully worn out. He needs to get healthy first and come back humble and ready to play for a minimal deal. Nobody is going to give him a big contract until he proves his worth again.

Thats key. I wouldnt want him here. Injuries, Steriods and to be associated with Tila Tequila says to me stay the eff away from this nut case. 26 is young, but just getting healthy doesnt do it for me. He needs to grow leaps and bounds from a maturity standpoint.

Re: Merriman goes to IR

This is what he had to say recently and yes, I would give him a chance at only 26. A change of scenery could do wonders, just look at LT who everyone thought was washed out.

# Merriman: "I'm ready for the next chapter in my career and I am excited about the opportunity to continue my journey with a new team.”

# Shawne Merriman: "I'm approaching this as an opportunity to grow as a player and to bring my leadership, talents to a new organization."

Re: Merriman goes to IR

Merriman is a one trick pony. The Skins already have linebackers that can rush the passer. Merriman is not known for his coverage skills or playing in space. He would be a possible upgrade over Carter in pass rushing ablity but I am not so sure that he is better than Alexander in coverage.

A smart team would use their due diligence and at least look at him, but I believe that they would confirm what I have just said after that look. In the end I do not think that he will be in Washington even though he is from Upper Marlboro.

He's 26...if he can get healthy I would add him to my team in a heartbeat. Now if Shanahan thinks he needs to commit to being a pro then I don't want him.

Re: Merriman goes to IR

Carter has been playing DE quite a bit the last 2 weeks since Alexander took over at OLB, and since we started mixing in more 4-3 looks.

Been noticing 4-3 looks more myself recently.

At this point, do people still wish we selected Merriman over Rogers because it looks like Merriman has become a broken shell of what he was just a couple of years ago
