well, the bbs and then newsgroups came first... then IRC. 4chan is sorta like the old newsgroups and they're very alive and kicking, so is reddit. the only difference there is moderation (up votes).

facebook hasn't really killed anything. IRC is pretty dead compared to the 90s though.

I was thinking more in terms of the first email sent back in the early 70's, but in terms of the 90's internet, yes, BBs and newsgroups came first. I haven't spent much time on 4chan or reddit. Of course, I spend most of my time on the internet at work...much of my time at home is spent knocking out the honey do lists, lol!

BBS's pre-dated the internet or at least widespread commercial internet access.

This is the only board I really check daily, I lurk on Reddit, a gaming forum, and usually if I have a problem I'll look for a specific forum for my needs, but that's about it.

Dunno if my ES membership is still active, just lurk there.

Like reading the articles at Hogs Haven, two sci-fi boards, checking out other teams open message boards around the time we play them (good info on other team as a fan, IMO)
