Great signing! We were looking at Hayward and Chris Maragos, who is a solid special-teamer but would be a wasted safety spot. We have enough reserve safeties, we need a starter there.

Hayward being a backup ILB is more valuable than another safety who isn't good enough to see the field as a safety. Maragos signed with Philly.

The structure is player friendly if you compare it to the Lichtensteiger or Montgomery deals, which the Redskins can easily get out of if they choose. This is a little trickier, because more than 20% is signing bonus, and the year one salary is so low.

If instead, he took a $2 mil SB and a year one salary of $4 million, the year one value is the same for the player, but he has less leverage for year two, as the team can save money by releasing him.
