Re: Redskins sign young tackle Bruce Campbell

While remaining patient (I keep reminding myself) this is another one that's a head scratcher. Why sign a guy, at this point in free agency, with zero career starts and didn't play a snap last season due to injury? There could not have been any competition for him and if there was...so what? IF he makes the opening day roster he's probably inactive every week. Can't see him playing special teams in a meaningful way.

This and Moss have made the least sense to me. This could've been done a day before OTA's not 20 hours into the league year.

IMO you sign some guys now because you want to see there workout habits have your trainers work with them and see if you can improve them.

Doesn't matter either way really. They have a set goal in their mind of who they want signed and dollars they want spend. Obviosuly Moss or Campbell didn't hinder this overall goal so sign them now if you think they have value.

To me that's the problem. If they think they have value, I'm starting to have SERIOUS questions about the evaluation skills going on in the room.

Agreed. These are bargain moves and don't have much impact cap wise.

Teams don't necessarily make moves in order of importance or value.

We could bring in another vet WR for the price of Moss. Maybe we'll get another Devery Henderson or Donte Stallworth, they worked out well...but you can't replace Moss' experience with the team and locker room presence for that price.

If we need him for just a spot on the depth chart, he's far more valuable than any random body off the street.

I buy that in a baseball locker room. On an NFL roster with 53 spots and a strong need at the position group on a roster coming off of 3-13, there's no room for 'grandpa reps'. Don't get me wrong, I love what Moss has done for us..especially through 2012, but last year he was a liability and won't get any better. I just don't get why he was signed.

Teams can carry 90 players during the offseason. They could let him go at any time. But he's a vet they know well and even at this point in his career he probably offers more than most guys out there for a 4th or 5th option.

I think we need to keep reminding ourselves that free agency is not the way to build championships - especially not a way to build a young, talented team. I'm fine with free agency being ho-hum and hopefully keep looking at the draft for starters. I think the 'skins can land some high quality guys in the draft, and hopefully continue to develop the current guys who have been drafted by the team.

If you say so but I don't see it. I see a guy who dropped a lot of passes and didn't gain much yardage after the catch in 2013. There are probably 20 other receivers that can give us what he does at his level on the depth chart.

Ok well, we're talking about a 4th or 5th WR here on a vet min deal, no guarantee he even makes the team.

I guess I just don't get what there is to be so upset about.

Yeah there's absolutely nothing to be upset about.

Moss's deal counts $600K against the cap, and bumps a guy out of the top 51 who makes $500K. So the net impact to the cap is a measly $100 grand. And you can cut him with no dead money.

In other words you keep acting like you haven't done anything at the WR position yet, bring in more talent, and let them fight it out for roster spots.

I can't stand how people don't understand that the incremental impact fo vet min deals on the cap is virtually zero. THERE IS NO DOWNSIDE.

Same goes for Bruce Campbell.

What are the rules on UDFA signing bonuses ? do they count against the cap ?............. granted it is not much money... just another no risk option

This could be the year where they sign a bunch of UDFAs, and get lucky with a LB, TE, or S
