Re: 2016 Redskins Salary Cap Status
What is Cousin's cap hit if we franchise him? Does all of the ~ $19 mil convert to CAP money?
The reason I ask, because I have always heard the rule of thumb with effectively knowing who a QB is, is 40 Starts. Cousins is about at 25 starts now, meaning another full season would bring him to that magic number 40. Would it not make sense to consider the franchise tag as an insurance policy. If you are already giving him a 3 year deal worth 16-17/mil yr... why not just tag him to get some more information and and give the long term deal after that season? Yes you are paying several million more in the first year, but you are also essentially buying quarterback insurance.

Most players reportedly hate the franchise tag, so you could be setting up a hard feelings negotiation where after the tags are done he wants to go somewhere else. My guess is that if we tag him, it would need to be done in the context of trying to get a long term deal done. |

Would the cap implications just completely remove that off the table? Seems to me we would be okay, and that it's a viable, if not likely, option.

Still, if the team franchises him, we would have the space, probably would limit some options. The difference in cap numbers between a well structured 18-20 million 5-6 year contract and a franchise tag value of 19 million is probably about 6 million cap dollars so it would still be in the team's interest to get a reasonable long term contract done |

Re: 2016 Redskins Salary Cap Status
I definitely don't see this negotiation getting to a hardball stage. I think Kirk loves McVay in particular, and the QB coach and Gruden and his teammates too. I think he will have a strong interest in being here, I don't see the negotiation being painful.
I also think McCloughan will see Cousins' work ethic and level of preparation and know that's the kind of guy he wants to set the tone for the team. He won't lowball him. They'll come to a deal commensurate with starting QB market value. Anybody thinking we'll get him for $10M per season needs to stop dreaming, McCloughan won't even do that in an opening conversation. And anybody thinking Kirk will have any interest in going somewhere else needs to chill. He'll be here and he'll get a fair deal.

I'm on the fence as whether to keep Jackson and Garcon.
Anyone think we will go WR in the first or 2nd round?

If Reed stays healthy - he will demand a large contract extension.

I doubt they would draft a WR in the second round. There are more urgent needs (DL, S, RB, LB etc. ) |

Jackson would get 12. He's incredibly valuable, don't underrate him. Reed wouldn't have the space he has without Jackson.

I'd hate to break it to you, but Kirk is without a doubt getting a 17mil/yr average. Think about it, guys like Alex Smith, Ryan Tannehill and Colin Kaepernick all over 17mil/yr and Cousins is clearly better than those guys. Not to mention the cap is going up and so are most of the salaries. My guess it's going to be a 5 year deal worth about $85mil, with about 25-30mil guaranteed. The only other option will be the franchise tag and that would cost about 19-20mil for a single season. NFL Salary Rankings | Spotrac

you gotta pay kirk. the only bad part about having a good qb is that they eat up a lot of cap space.

Re: 2016 Redskins Salary Cap Status
Yeah, All Pierre has done is show how valuable he is lately. Going to be tough to move on from either one of them. Josh Gordon I could see being a cheaper option to pursue via free agency with a lower price tag.

Josh Gordon???!!! We don't need that kind of disruption. He's a much better fit for for the Cowboys. In fact, I'd like the Cowboys to acquire Josh Gordon and Billy Manziel.
