Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
Our line was never exactly the forte of this defense. They rarely got pressure last year without the blitz.
Harris looked awful. I really think letting Smoot leave kicked our ass. We'll see!

he led a drive with mccombs. a sorry running back who isnt going to make the team. The first fumble was hard to tell whose fault it was, the second was a fumble by the RB in the endzone. I thought Campbell looked very good.

Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
As go the Dirtbags, so will go our season. And they looked GREAT last night!
As long as none of them get hurt (knock on wood) and Buges keeps them sharp our offense will be fine. |

Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
Firtst of all, it's only the first preseason game. So neither the defense or the offense is going to show much by way of schemes or designs, not yet. GW will have these guys ready by the begginning of the season. I don't know if there's any team that could have three D-line starters out and and a starting corner and not feel it.
I was really impressed with Nemo and Brunell. Even if Brunell was going against the second team or whatever, he had plenty of zip on the ball and was more acurate than he ever was in '04. The O-line look really good and will get nothing but better as we go along. I think the addition of Nemo and Portis in the new scheme will take a lot of pressure of Ramsey. Go skins!!! |

Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
I thought Ramsey looked ok, not great, just ok. There seemed to be a lot of 4 yard passes on 3rd and 5 situations. Not really sure whose fault that was, but it was frustrating. But it's still early. The "plan all along"-as Gibbs would say-is for Ramsey to be the starter opening day. I'd like it if he put together a dominating performance next week and definitively wins that starting job, as opposed to not losing it.
Even if you don't like Brunell, I would think that as Redskins fans we should all be pretty happy with how he did yesterday. He made good decisions, sharp throws. All around I was happy with his performance. Yeah I know it was against backups, but wasn't he playing alongside backups on offense as well? As for Campbell, based on what some people here have said about him I was just amazed that he knew to line up behind the center. Seriously though, for his first time out there I thought he did pretty well. I actually feel a little bit better about our overall QB situation after Saturday's game. It was painful to hear Darrell Green keep referring to Bill Musgrave and "Hargrave" and his comparison of Brunell to Favre was odd. For those of you that didn't catch it, he said that Brunell had started his career as a backup to Favre. And then he talked about how Favre had decided to rededicate himself this offseason and how he had faced so much adversity recently-father's death, wife's lung cancer, brother-in-law's freak fatal accident. And then he said that people don't realize that Brunell has also faced a lot of adversity recently. So here I'm thinking "wow, what could this be? Something going on in Brunell's personal life?". But then DG says Brunell got frustrated with the whole situation in Jacksonville toward the end of his time there and had to deal with fans frustrated with him last year-his first in Washington. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but fans heckling you is nowhere near the adversity that Favre has been dealing with. Is it?

Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
we were missing our good D line guys too...
campbell had two fumbles and int while he was playing, but neither were his fault. His stats look bad, but his play (vs scrubs) really didn't. |

Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
I didnt get to see the game, it wasnt televised here. But from what I was hearing from people the playcalling was stil pretty bad. Or atleast Ramseys execution of it. On third and long he was still throwing the ball to a hb for a short, if any gain. And not attempting to look down field first and try to actually get the first down. Yes I know you dont open up your bag of tricks in preseason, but getting a first down isnt really a big secret in football. Im pretty sure your playbook would still be safe if you threw the ball past the sticks...

Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
Ramsey looked terrible. I can understand why Joe Gibbs drafted Jason Campbell. Ramsey is not an NFL calibur QB to be honest. For peaks sake how many years is it gonna take you to make an accurate throw. comfortable with receivers is no excuse for professionals. Basically he looked awkward and lost. He is gonna get pulled early on if we lose to chicago and dallas.

I'm gonna take a chance here and say that he was fidgety for a whole other reason. He was giddy as a school girl. He kept seeing ways to exploit the guys left and right, seeing recievers prancing through the secondary in slowmotion wearing tu tus calling seductively for the ball. Defenders donning concrete shoes, angry and befuddled. All the while he's got gibbs in his ear... "dont tilt your hand". So he lofts a pillow into the air to the man in the cement loafers. Great post, canthetuna. This has kinda gotten lost in all this "Ramsey looks more confident" talk: this is the beginning of the biggest season of Ramsey's life--eveyone, himself included, has said that he has to step up--and so it's not a surprise that he might be the most fidgety guy out there. My guess (and hope) is that he'll shake off the first-night jitters, get comfortable behind the gelling O-line, and have a great year. JoeTheisman--maybe, but maybe not. We'll see. I remember how Mark Rypien looked early on in his skins career. But later, he went to Disneyworld.

Here's a little clip from Comcastsportsnet of Patten after the game. Seems to me he has it about right--including his fianl comment about making throws in the NFL:

To be fair, he got trashed because he played like trash last year and had a lot to do with throwing a promising season away. I'm glad he's getting his bearings back, but he was playing against second stringers as a backup himself for the first time in over a decade. I hope he can make a great backup that brings veteran leadership to a squad of young QBs, but think about it. He didn't go in and score 4 TDs. He didnt even score one. He just completed some passes, and everybody's talking about how great he did. He definately showed improvement, but thats really not saying all that much. |
