Re: All things offseason discussion part II

Not sure how it would work & they've talked about it forever, but the NFL is smart and the world is much more global now. It's all about money, and it would seem they've just about maximized income potential in the U.S. If it grew internationally, it could get ridiculously more $$. Not sure how much they would care about it there, but at least england already knows rugby. Canada also seems like a natural expansion.

If football became global, it could reach the stratosphere of financial success. They'd just have the name-problem (football vs futbol, etc).

[edit] Did some research, looks like World Cup last month hit records with ~20 million viewers, although the SuperBowl is usually ~110 million. Still, that means there are millions (if not billions) worldwide that are still possible new viewers for NFL.

Re: All things offseason discussion part II

I think the NFL is trying to copy FIFA because of all the viewers/sponsors the World Cup gets. Plus the power FIFA has is unmatched.

Not sure how it would work just because of the time difference though. Maybe they should consider starting a European League versus having a single team in Europe.

Re: All things offseason discussion part II

Heard a rumor that Jay Gruden was spotted here in Saratoga for the first weekend of the track, found a link that confirms

Saratoga Notebook: Ortiz hits trifecta on opening day

Quote:
Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden and Cincinnati defensive coordinator Paul Guenther were at the Spa for Opening Day and in the winner’s circle for the Sir Cat Stakes.

The NFL coaches handed out the post-race hardware in the winner’s circle after jockey Joel Rosario rode Tourist to a win for trainer Bill Mott and owner Gary Barber and WinStar Farm.

Gruden was impressed with what he saw from the track.

“It’s my first time,” Gruden said. “It’s a great place, a lot of history. I just wanted to be a part of it with the jockeys and trainers and owners. To see it in person is quite an experience.”

The first-year Washington coach did not make any bets but he did notice the athleticism of the jockeys.

“They’re very athletic and courageous to do what they do,” Gruden said. “With the animals they’re on top of it’s very impressive and you can see they make a huge difference in the race with the positioning and timing that they have.”

Re: All things offseason discussion part II

from DC to London, nonstop = 7 1/2 hours one way

https://www.google.com/flights/#sear...6;r=2014-08-10

San Diego to London, nonstop = 10 1/2 hours one way

https://www.google.com/flights/#sear...n+dc+to+london

i would feel sorry for the London team having to travel up to 8 times per year. Im sure the NFL would schedule it so the London team could play 3-4 consecutive road games ... but then that would still suck for the london team players to be living out of hotels for a month at a time ....

i just dont see how it makes sense unless we are talking special super fast concordia jets ...

I think they would also maintain a facility here in the states for their home away from home type of deal.

I was expecting improvement along that line, but Snee retiring leaves a large hole.

JoeRedskin: for what it's worth, in the PFT article that Matty posted it was mentioned that Goodell has previously said that if the league were to expand it would do so by two teams, not just one.

If there is indeed an expansion, I think adding one team to each division would be better than having some divisions with more teams than others, but that would be a huge expansion. Not sure how well that would work.

Re: All things offseason discussion part II

Another issue is what a single new team does to the scheduling. While I am sure they would figure something out, the current league structure makes for a pretty good scheduling system that enhances divisional rivalry and is pretty equitable w/in the divisional system, but still allows for fans to see every team in the league play their team over the course of four seasons.

32 teams and a 16 game season seems to be a pretty good congruence of numbers. Not sure it would work so well with 33, 34 or 35. Not even sure if 36 would work but that's where I think you would have to go to get the formulaic scheduling we have now. (which I like BTW).

Re: All things offseason discussion part II

IMO, Rak was poised for a breakout season in 2012, but got injured week 2. He dominated the New Orleans game, I remember Keim and others marveling about it. Last year he played very well, but I think this year he is poised for another "breakout" year. Hopefully he stays on the field. If he does, he's going to be worth every penny they pay him in the off season.

Re: All things offseason discussion part II

Of those Toronto, Portland, and LA are the only teams I could see working. Adding a second Chicago team would be a failure due to the Bears dominating that market. Birmingham is only a 2 1/2 hr drive to ATL and isn't that big of a city. That would be like putting a team in charleston Sc. It just wouldn't work.

Salt lake possibly, and if the league was expanding by 8 teams I am sure London and Mexico City would be on that list.

So I'm wondering why Tony Dungy says he wouldn't have singed Michael Sam because he would be a distraction. Yet when Michael Vick got out of jail he lobbied for him. I'm starting to think Tony isn't for gay people.

He's of course entitled to his opinion, but that was a pretty damning statement to make in my opinion.
