Coaching is also about making adjustments depending on personnel or game situations. Realizing a player's strengthes and weaknesses, and then utilizing those positive assets while minimizing the negative ones. I think it is fair to say that Haslett has maximized the weaknesses in the secondary for other teams to freely exploit.

DaShon Goldson isn't leaving San Fran in my opinion, but Jarius Byrd will leave Buffalo for a reasonable price. He should be a high priority this off season. Several good cornerbacks will also be available.

In my opinion, the team should draft offense, and sign free agents for defense. Free agents usually give a faster rate of return, while draftees can be groomed along with RGlll for longer term planning and cohesion.
While I understand Merriweather and Jackson are no Ed Reeds, i'd consider them head and shoulders above what we have going now. Meriweather was in the pro bowl only a couple of years ago and Tanard Jackson has never been a slouch on the field - just a basket case off it. Call me crazy but i think our defense would look a whole lot better with those two in the mix.

#Redskins' 32nd ranked pass defense: Allowed NFL-worst 7 passes of 40+ & NFL-worst 16 pass TD's, yield 155 more pass yds a game than #49ers.

The #Redskins' defense ranks 29th in the #NFL overall and dead-last against the pass

Fact is, our secondary (patchwork gang) is absolutely horrendous. Whoever said that they are actually playing well this season hasn't been watching the games I've been watching. B Merriweather and T Jackson would definitely be an upgrade, but Im not sure it would put us as a middle of the pack defense even...........we need youth and talent at that position, and with the league a pass happy league, those guys are worth a premium, and its hard as heck to find those diamonds in the rough. Something needs to happen, that much is for sure. It feels as if any college program with a competent QB could suit up and throw all over our asses, pick us apart.

Re: Skins/Giants post game thread

While I think Shanahan needs to go, I still tend to not want to see any knee jerk reactions this year. The secondary is a mess. He has proven that he can build a good offense around a good player and tailor it to said player. Lets now give him one more year to get the defense back on track. Cutting bait right now would be disastrous, but I believe that RG3's performance has ensured that Shanahan will be around a bit longer than some people would like. I think he is vastly overrated, but I am not above getting behind the man and rooting for him to become what he once was. But over three years in, and our defense completely changed and in shambles, the patience is starting to wear a bit thin. I am a realist, but above that, I am a redskins fan, and I wish him the best. Now Jim Haslett, on the other hand.............

You cant turn over the ball as much as the Skins did and expect to win but with that said they were very much in position to win that game the the secondary let one go straight through them. My goat horns go to the secondary.

I just can't get over the way the defensive unit has regressed. The Redskins have gone up against some pretty good quarterbacks every week so far, but the defensive backfield is gift wrapping too many TD catches to the opposing offenses.

Goat horns to our receivers. What a pathetic way to give them the game, Moss.

And I hate to call out the refs but those two calls sucked shit and perhaps costed us the game.
Not at all; with our defensive history of late coupled with Manning's 4th quarter heroics of late, a score was pretty much guaranteed. As a matter of fact I was a little relieved that the Skins gave up the TD as quickly as they did so as to give the offense a chance to score in the end.

Re: Skins/Giants post game thread

Here are my postgame thoughts:
The future always looks bleaker after a loss, but two decades of incompetence does justify pessimism. I’m worried that this team will never be good for RGIII. It’s not like the skill level on the team is going to improve anytime soon. The skins don’t have a first round draft pick until 2015, and with the salary cap penalty they have little room to improve through free agency. The overall skill on the team is likely to decrease over the next two seasons. No matter how good RGIII is, I question the patience of Redskins fans if—after three seasons—he still hasn’t captained a winning team. And it’s a slippery slope once fans start questioning the QB. But of course, that’s getting a little bit ahead of things. The main point I have is this: even with one of the best QBs in the league, it’s possible that a team can be subpar, and with the salary cap situation, the draft picks situation, and the fact that the FO hasn’t been entirely competent even in the best of situations, there is a possibility that the Redskins can—for years—be a team with the one of the best QBs in the league and not be a winning team .

Mike Ditka just ripped the Redskins defensive scheme. Basically calling out Haslett for letting that last play unfold as it did..

It's just a great talent in Cruz who was stifled all day, making a great play in rhythm with his QB, Eli Manning. Oh and there is this - these guys won a Super Bowl last year, and Eli has won two -- tip your cap to them -- champions make big plays when they need them the most.
That is a fair statement.... It just doesnt make the pain go away...

What if:

What if Moss had stopped at the 1 yard line. And we could have run more time off the clock?

All the Shanahan bashing is ridiculous. He's made his mistakes but I think he's got this team on the right track. Blowing it up after this year would be the worst thing we could do. But I would like to see him get a new D-coordinator.

Re: Skins/Giants post game thread

Well, here are my quick thoughts (editor's note: I'll bring "Smoot Lays the Smack Down" when Meriweather, Garcon or Brown return)

RG3: The scramble and thrown on 4th and 10 was incredible. Clearly showed his athletic ability. But more importantly, that's the type of play that more often than not a rookie QB loses sense of where he is and crosses the line of scrimmage before throwing the ball. Good presence of mind on his part. But he can't be absolved for the TOs. The fumble looked like poor awareness on his part. The INT to Paulsen looked like a miscommunication between the two of them. Probably doesn't happen with Davis in there.

Kyle Shanahan: Think he's insanely talented and he'd be missed. But his problem, which I've said before, is that he thinks too hard sometimes. Run on 3rd down? No problem with that. The Redskins had been showing an inability to hold onto the ball and you want to stay in FG range so if you can get 3 and hold them to 3 you're still just down 7. Run an option? Ok, that's a bit of a stretch (no pun intended) but we have the talent to pull it off. Run an option with Niles Paul at that point in the game? That's thinking too hard. That's "they don't expect this so I'll fool them with this" Sometimes you gotta just go with the most obvious play and personnel and execute. Sometimes you gotta just rely on the brawns and not the brains.

Turnovers: The turnovers were terrible but I have a hard time getting worked up over them, because twice we got the ball right back on our turnovers. Heck of an athletic play by Rob Jackson on his INT by the way.

Secondary: I can't really blame the scheme in this scenario. Williams simply made a poor play.

As Moss crossed the goal line I shouted, "No! We scored too fast!"

This is essentially the same secondary we had last year, so why were they so much better last year?
