Re: New Defensive Coordinator 2015

2 weeks ago probably 99% of people didn't know this guy's name. Now it's a given he's a bad hire? Ok.

I'm willing to give it a chance. Let's see what happens with the rest of the D staff.

Re: New Defensive Coordinator 2015

does this leave the door open for morris to remain secondary coach?

cooley sd he really like morris, says he knows football, the players love him and typically position coachs get lil to no say in weekly game plans and just have to say "yes sir".

When this is all said and done....I'd like to see a survey.
I personally would have kept Haslett over this guy....and I did not like his work as it was consistantly below average.
a monkey could win 1 game out of 16....even if he didn't show up to coach.

I could be wrong, but based on his track record, I seriously doubt it.
I sure hope this is all just a bad report and it is not true or official yet...and they de-Zornify this situation before it is too late.
or...they could give him a guaranteed 5 year deal for 10M...we shall see

I'm sure he'll be better than has and I'm glad we didn't hire a old head to be our DC. At least he's fresh

Why would we waste space in our memory for the defensive coordinator for one of the Worst defenses in the history of the game (detroit)?
We didn't know his name because he has done nothing impressive.
Name recognition generally comes from success.
The fact that no one knows him isn't always a bad sign...until we looked at his track record....that is why it is a bad hire.

Hire not confirmed... I will consider this a Jim Fassel call back when it's all said & done.

Not sure why Barry is automatically an Allen hire. Worked with Gruden for many years in TB, perhaps left a good impression?

Re: New Defensive Coordinator 2015

I'm down with giving Barry a chance, got to start as a DC somewhere. The positives are that his father in Law is Marinelli, worked under Monte Kiffin in TB and the SD LB's were pretty good this year.

I would take old and successful any day of the week over young and a crap shoot...
Compare Gibbs to Zorn.

Youth or energy doesn't have some magical advantage over age.
Experience is incredibly valuable...look at our new GM...the great thing about him is he has both...that is a Win Win.

Re: New Defensive Coordinator 2015

From the Chargers website:

Barry turned in one of his most masterful coaching performances in 2013, working with a unit that was besieged by injuries throughout the season. Starting inside linebackers Donald Butler and rookie second-round draft pick Manti Te’o both missed time due to injury, but finished the year second and third on the team in tackles with 99 and 93, respectively. Projected starting outside linebacker Melvin Ingram spent most of the year on the “Physically Unable to Perform” list due to an offseason knee injury and fellow starting outside linebacker Jarret Johnson missed five games with a host of ailments. As a result of all the injuries, only twice in 2013 did the Chargers start the same four linebackers in consecutive weeks. Still, linebackers were responsible for 16 of the team’s 35 sacks, including 4.5 by Thomas Keiser, a practice squad player at the start of the season who went on to lead the linebackers in sacks and quarterback hits (10). Another valuable performer was Reggie Walker, a special teams player for most of his career who started six games at both inside and outside linebacker and registered the first three sacks of his NFL career and ranked third among the linebackers with 49 tackles.

A native of Boulder, Colo., Barry is a long-time NFL linebackers coach and former defensive coordinator. As a prep, he attended Fairview High School, the same high school as defensive coordinator John Pagano. He played at Fairview for Pagano’s father, Sam, who was the head coach. Barry then spent the 1989-90 seasons at the University of Michigan before transferring to the University of Southern California, where he earned varsity letters in 1992 and ’93. He graduated from USC in 1994 with a degree in communications.

Barry transitioned to coaching the following year, landing a graduate assistant’s job at USC in 1995. He spent five seasons coaching collegiately before landing his first NFL position as a quality control coach with the San Francisco 49ers in 2000. A year later, he was named linebackers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and in 2002, he won a Super Bowl ring with the Bucs as they defeated the Oakland Raiders, 48-21, in Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego. The title capped off a season in which the Buccaneers led the NFL in total and scoring defense, and in which linebacker Derrick Brooks was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Barry spent six seasons in Tampa Bay before landing the job as defensive coordinator in Detroit during the 2007-08 seasons. He returned to Tampa Bay in 2009 as linebackers coach and has continued coaching the position since.

But this reported Joe Barry hiring is weak. This is so setting up for a new overall staff by McCloughan in 2016.

I agree 100%. Don't expect much next year boys.

I dont care who his Father in law is...
Jay Gruden is not Jon Gruden.
Bruce Allen is not George Allen.
I think at one point we had a starting QB who was the brother of a successful QB under Spurrier.
Remember Spurriers success hiring everyone he knew from florida and we all wanted to give Danny Wuerfel a chance, etc.
This whole good old boy hiring practice is a disaster.
I work in hiring for corporations...this is a conflict of interest interviewing people you know or your relatives..
If others make the hiring decision that is fine...but hiring buddies is bad..and hiring family members of successful people is crazy.
Everyone has their own Resume....to stand alone.
This guys sucked.
OK....maybe we should consider hiring him as a LB coach....but we already have good ones....arguably better....in fact....they would probably be more qualified for the DC job that this guy.

I am done with my rant.

Re: New Defensive Coordinator 2015

Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerratto would have hired Wade Phillips.
