Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread
I don't understand the love for Mitchell, he's an average safety that had a good year. He wasn't that good with the Raiders, he was projected as a 7th rounder even possibly a FA.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread
Maybe Allen, the diehard Skin, has overestimated the attractiveness of our team due to his own misplaced fondness. Perhaps we needed to sweeten a couple of deals with more $$ to overcome players' 3-13-phobia.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread
So the success he had in Tampa can't be replicated because he loves the Skins so much?
If anything, his desire to see the Skins win will make his decision-making more shrewd I'd think, if it even factors in at all. I doubt he's overvaluing his players because they're in B&G rather than Pewter and Red. He'd probably give the same effort and expertise to any job he's hired to do. I trust him. I do like that we're not handing out stupid contracts. There's no 3-13 phobia...look how many quality players the Jaguars, Jets, Bills and Browns have signed this offseason.

It appears that there are several players which we coveted but missed on because we didn't offer enough. The fact that the Jags, etc., get the players they want just shows that they are smarter about market realities than we are. The fact that this has happened repeatedly is on Allen. And there must be a reason for this repeated behavior. I am perfectly willing to admit that I was engaging in unsubstantiated speculation about why but there must be SOME reason. I agree that it is good that we have not handed out ugly big contracts. But it is possible to be too cheap, too.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread
Again, I am hopeful that this is a sign of
(1) A plan to spend reasonably in FA. Essentially, the FO set values and stuck to them and didn't "panic bid" when a player they would like is leaning another direction. For example, both Graham and Mitchell had non-monetary preferences for the team with whom they signed. To get either, we would have had to pay UFA market value PLUS extra to overcome their desire to play for their personal home teams; and (2) A desire to develop from within. As I have pointed out in numerous threads, it is likely that 20-23 players from our last four drafts will be on this team come September. If folks like Geddis, LeRib, Compton, Rambo, Thomas, Crawford etc. continue to improve, we will hopefully see an improved product in September with more wins come January. If we have a strong draft this year, it will be b/c we have drafted players who will develop into starters, NOT b/c we drafted immediate impact players (although that would be nice - there is a reason most folks say it takes some amount of time to judge a draft class). At the same time, because of this franchise's history for the last 2 decades, and when I take off the burgundy glasses, I fear that: (1) By not signing any of the significant free agents available at positions of real need (i.e. - DB's and OL), and b/c of the bad reputation from past classes, the FO has swung the other way in terms of its offseason approach such that it won't sign ANYONE to a "big contract" regardless of whether doing so would objectively be a good move; (2) There wasn't a real plan in place to address current needs; or (3) The FO had a plan but got caught flat footed by the money being thrown about. Ultimately, it's a question of "Can we trust that this is an actual, comprehensive change from the past approach to team building and FA or is this just a new and different type of dysfunction that will sabotage my favorite team?" I don't know the answer and suspect that only time, and wins, will tell.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread
It would not have cost too much to enhance the defense without getting into Talib territory in terms of price:
D'Qwell Jackson ILB $5.5 mil. TJ Ward SS $5.5 mil. Mike Mitchell FS $5.0 mil. Any one of these signings would fill a hole on defense with a quality player. Also, Linval Joseph DT $6.1 mil. Would have seriously upgraded our defensive front, making everyone else better. We could have gotten some impact players at reasonable prices.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread
I would be happy with a Thurmond signing. At the same time, it is possible he may be Josh Wilson 2.0. I think, based on what I have read on both, I would prefer Thurmond to Munnerlyn.
Heck, Thurmond and Browner would make me smile, but that may be too rich for the current FO.

Build through the draft more than FA. I am fine with not throwing big money around rite now or any money for that matter. Next year we get our full compliment of picks back. Lets see if Griff is or isnt "the man" this year. Lets see if Gruden can be a good HC. These are the two most important questions about our team rite now. Far more important than FA at the moment. Lets pay our own, and build stability. Lets hope and pray the new regime can evaluate talent. Than down the road we can plug holes through FA. Its a process that may or may not result in immediate success, but that has alot to do with our QB and our HC.

honestly, look back in two years and most big money FA signings tend to be mistakes. a lot of times non-moves are the best moves. I would like a safety though. |

I know cheap and not overspending is important with alot of holes. But getting an impact player on defense, whether Safety, ILB, or DLine, should be attainable with our cap space. I think a Darryl Smith or Chris Clemons would add impact to our defense. Talk nickle corner or rotational D-lineman all you want, but I dont see impact player at this point out there.
