Re: Skins/Giants post game thread

Despite the turnovers we could have won that game. We could have won with 4 turnovers but you can't play defense like the Skins did when Cruz got behind the whole secondary and expect to win. That was more sad than the turnovers. We could be plus 2 in turnovers and lose playing defense like that.

We are one more draft from a contender for the Superbowl. RG3 is a stud and has proven he can keep us in games with any team in this league. Great move to get him Shanny. Now just fix that secondary and another stud linebacker to be groomed by London Fletcher when he can't continue and we will be good. The O-Line could use a stud or 2 but we are very close to turning this around.

Breaking Down the Biggest Plays of NFL Week 7 | Bleacher Report

A good break down on our busted play. (scroll down to Eli's game winning TD pass)

Quote:
...for a few seconds, anyway. Eli Manning's been playing a long time, and he's led more than his fair share of fourth-quarter comebacks. The Giants faced 2nd-and-10 from their own 22-yard line with 1:23 still left on the clock, and Manning decided he didn't need that long.

They lined up in a shotgun, with trips to the right, a split end out left and a tailback in to block. The Redskins are in an interesting 2-4-5 nickel, with two defensive tackles up front, four linebackers and five defensive backs:

The two outside linebackers blitz, leaving the two inside 'backers in zone coverage. Tight end Martellus Bennett is the inside slot receiver in the trips group, and he (sort of) chips the blitzer before running a five-yard out. The other two receivers in the trips are the ones who matter:

Victor Cruz is running a fly route, and the other receiver runs a deep curl. This puts pressure on safety Madieu Williams, who's got the deep zone coverage.

The protection sets up nicely for Manning—the blitzers are picked up. Cruz beats his man Dijon Gomes cleanly, and Williams sees it. He sees it...and...does...nothing:

Williams takes forever to flip his hips and go. Cruz flies past him at full throttle before he can even turn. Manning makes the read and delivers the ball, with Cruz two steps clear of both Williams and Gomes:

The rest is salsa. Cruz scores the game-winning touchdown, and Manning—after a rough game—puts another notch in his belt.

Cliffnotes: Williams is garbage.

I'm afraid the bad about Williams outweighs the good. The good things don't happen enough to make me think Williams isn't garbage. He's either running into his own men trying to go for the big hit rather than the INT or blowing coverages.

We could've paid any scrub to do that.

also, while the run after the catch was nice, the actual int was nothing special at all because the ball was overthrown by the QB - the cause of the TD had more to do with the run back more so than him being in position to make that ONE play that he had

He happened to be running twards an errant ball and than had an entire team of blockers in front of him. Wasnt exactly a great read on the ball followed by some flashy dashy run into the endzone. Just sayin.

I'm not sure if the results would have been drastically different, but I can't imagine a tandem of Jackson and Meriweather being any worse than what we've been putting out there. Who knows, they might have been adequate. We'd be in much better shape with just adequate play from the safety spot. So far it's been pretty atrocious.

Agreed. We dont need all pro's. we need serviceable. Man if we were just a little bit better in the secondary I think we could possibly be 7-0. Thats how close all these games have been. The Cruz throw. The first play against Cincy. Danny Freakin Amenwutever.

Actually Cooley mentioned on the Doc and Bmitch show today he was confident of making it with the team. He was not sure he could cut it with the TE ranks but assured he'd be a lock at Safety.........

Absolutely agree we are closer than we have ever been before. Even with the injury to Rak and Carriker, I think our front seven is solid ... not spectacular, solid. If the safety play were even adequate we would be in so much better shape.

Do you think it is safe to assume we draft for need in the second round or is there someone in free agency we should throw our money at. Also will jackson even be back on the team next year or are his playing days over? I mean we probably need to be looking for both a FS and a SS. A corner too.
Edit: gonna take these thoughts / questions to the free agency thread.

Re: Skins/Giants post game thread

The fact of the matter is the Saints, Rams, Bengals, Falcons, Vikings, and Giants have scorched the Redskins secondary to death. The only time the defense has held a QB under 300 yards passing was against the Bucs and that was hardly impressive because Tampa Bay amassed only 1 yard short of 300 against the Redskins secondary.

Something needs to happen. Whether players are playing out of position or if the coaches are calling ineffective coverages, they need to fix the problem and soon. The Redskins are not in the division lead because of the defensive secondary. The Redskins have a losing record only because of the defensive secondary. The Redskins are in last place in the NFC East only because of the defensive secondary. The Redskins are not 7-0 or 6-1 only because of the defensive secondary.
