Also, I think they have to consider the possibility of watering down the product.
I think players will like it for two reasons, if they can drop 2 preseason games for two regular season games, they'd go for it.
Also, adding two games means records previously untouchable, would be MUCH easier to beat. What record would be safe with two more regular season games????

While I like the idea of getting rid of preseason games in favor of real games, that fact that the NFL wants to play the extra game outside of this country doesn't make me happy. The NFL schedule is already hard to make fair as it is. with Thursday games and short weeks. Imagine having to play a game after having played the previous week in London or Spain. Or needing a win to make the playoffs and having it in Germany or Japan. Any one here ever had that kind of jet lag? What time would these games be? A game in Tokyo started at 1 Pm EST would be 2 AM. You think anyone is going to that game? As much as we love the NFL here in the USA, it has not caught on elsewhere. So be it. Forcing it down the throats of other countries isn't going to help. I think the NFL will be fine if they leave Europe and Asia to MLB and the NBA.

I beg to differ - within 72 hours of registration being open for this London NFL game there were over half a million ticket requests, not to mention how many were requested after that point.
Demand has been so high that the NFL are now going to have a "lottery" to determine who can get first option on buying tickets (I personally was registered within the first 10 mins of registration opening).

I know many in the US are keen to protect what they feel is theirs (and we have discussed this a fair few times in other threads), but the NFL is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more popular than many US residents would think.

Whilst I think this London game is good for the NFL to expand its potential revenue base, I too agree that a full week of "worldwide" games wouldn't work at this point - they should continue to do the 1-2 overseas games that they have agreed to for the next 5 years and work from there.

17 week season, no thanks, as has been mentioned earlier 18 is a much better number - BUT with an 18 game season all of a sudden records that have stood for a long time become easier to reach, etc.

I also agree that the SB should not leave the US, for Goodell to even mention it means he must be smoking something.

Just raise the salary cap by a % equal to the increased number of games to appease the players that feel they should not play more games for the same pay; or get rid of the salary cap, which I am all for.

Also, I say get rid of all pre-season games and got to a 20 game schedule divided up into two 10 game sessions. Each 10 game session would have a Bye week and there would be an additional Bye week in between, sort of like an All-Star break without the All-Star game. That gives us 23 weeks of NFL not including playoffs.

No preseason games will be dropped so forget about that.

It only makes good sense to drop whatever you add to the regular season. I hope they drop one or two of these pointless games!

Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!

The nfl is gonna screw itself if it tries to fix what isn't broken. The league is at its greatest success, don't screw w/it.

As it is now, the 16 game schedule has usually resulted in a good no. of meaningless games at the end of the season. There is parity right now, but the longer the season the harder it is to catch up in the standings. That's why we have so many playoff teams playing their 2nd stringers in games 15 & 16.
16 games is a lot, 17 or 18 is really a lot. Preseason games are not for starters as much as guys trying to make teams. If they cut out preseason games, teams will just have scrimmages against one another & there will still be the chance of injury.

I like the idea, just not so sure how much the players are going to like it. It will be interesting to hear their take on this.

I don't think so.

Following an expansion of the regular season from 14 to 16 games in the 1978 season it never hurt a thing. It just increased popularity and ratings for the NFL. This is what they are trying to do once again. With a kicker, pick up on the Out of Country cash flow, we reap the bennies also.

For what logical reason do you think it would do harm?

Re: Talk of a 17 game season. GREAT!

The idea of having the Superbowl overseas and the proposition of a 17th game means that the NFL market is tapped out here in the states basically, according to the NFL. The league feels the need to expand no matter what and the only way to go is Europe or Asia. NFL Europe is getting 30,000+ average attendance, but most of the teams are based in Germany where a lot of our GI's are. Nobody in Europe is going to care that much about the Superbowl played between two "Yank" teams. As for the extra 17th game? Really, don't you think the season is long enough? The NFL is making gazillion $$$$$$$ every season with tickets merchandising, concessions, etc. Why the need to lengthen the season one lousy week just to rake in more $$$$$$. The guys get banged up enough after week 12 much less week 18. Too many star players are getting hurt with the 16 game season as it is. Why tempt fate for another week. The quality of the product that the NFL puts out has gone down drastically since they have expanded the season as well as the league. I say let the schedule be.

4+16=20
2+17=19

What extra Football? While you gain 2 meaningfull games you still lose out on two more, because 1 of the now 19 will be outta the country. Even if you watch it on TV you still lose one week of football.
