How has Va. been tough on traffic laws except for this new law? I"ll vote for anyone who wants to reduce our goverment! Well, maybe not anyone but Hog1 has my vote. This question is your first question as you run for governor.

Just an observation.
I grew up in the DC area. Going back to the seventies, VA outlawed the use of radar detectors. It was basically unheard of at the time

Re: Virginia Laws: Stiff Fines added July 1st
My problem with this law is the inability for it to be enforced in any consistent way. The discretion granted police is so wide as to when to enforce the law or levy the BIG fines that it becomes whimsical. Just reading through the list it seemed that the police can ding you for just about any minor infraction and turn it into a major expense. I'm all about law and order BUT I am also about fairness. The inherent inability for consistent application seems to me to be abhorent.
"Just obey the law and you'll be fine". Fair enough, but look through the list - cop's had a bad day, needs a big ticket to meet quota, stops you for 1) "bald tires"; 2) cutting the corner in a grocery store lot (not cutting through, just shaving teh corner at the end of an aisle) or, 3) sin upon sin, you simply were so busy looking for your turn that it came on you with little or no time to signal and, instead of driving down the street signaling for a turn, making a legal U-turn and circling back so you can legally make the turn - you do a quick take and see nobody behind and make the quick right turn before you drive past it. The cop cites you for BIG fines. As he is writing your ticket - three cars zip past driving recklessly and no fines ensue. No, this does not excuse illegal acts BUT it does go to fairness and common sense. I have a problem with laws drafted for the main goal being the creation of revenue for the State and doing so in a manner that grants agents of the State to do so in an inconsistent manner and one that invites abuse.

People on this board cant tell me they dont make turns occasionally without using their signals...I'm not saying they do that everytime, but common we have to be realistic. I actually agree with SBF here (for once), this is rediculous. Why not jack up the fines for the idiots who go 80 in a 55 or do some REAL bad driving...cutting across a parking lot???? A PARKING LOT!? And my other problem with this is their reasoning behind it...you are going to fine someone 1000 extra dollars to help raise money for the state? Thats the best you can come up with? If you want to raise the penalties a tad, maybe 50, hell even 100 dollars, than do what you have to do....but that is beyond rediculous, imo.

Re: Virginia Laws: Stiff Fines added July 1st
I'm with JoeRedskin 100%. I got treated like a second hand citizen one day because of an illegal U-Turn. We were forced out of the car, asked to search the car (to which we denied), and there were 8 cop cars that showed up with spotlights. My problem isn't the illegal U-turn I made, I'm fine with that. I made a mistake, didn't see the sign, but I did break the law. It's the fact that he had a bad day and because we were all low 20s figured we were doing something illegal. While we were sitting there, five cars made the exact same U-turn, yet that "has nothing to do with you."
Give cops LESS power, not more. Make the laws black and white, most of them aren't bright enough to make decisions. My very favorite is the cops telling me as I was getting fingerprinted for underage possession of alcohol that had I not been caught with a black dude and a hispanic dude charges would have never been booked. Hurray for racism.

Re: Virginia Laws: Stiff Fines added July 1st
I'll admit. I sort of have a weird fear of parking lots. One time I was T-Boned by someone cutting across a parking lot and smashing right into the side of my car. Another time someone swerved to avoid another car that was cutting across the parking lot and hit my parked car as I was walking back to it. Still another time, someone was cutting across the parking lot and hit my cousin (not my cousin's car, my actual cousin). Thankfully it wasn't serious.
As for using turn signals, it's a pet peeve of mine. But doesn't irk me quite as much as cutting across a parking lot

Well, how will cutting across a parking lot be enforced? If in the way you make it out, I'm fine with it? Someone that clips a wide open spot? Pulling through to the open spot on the other end?

No one should be surprised to hear that the legislator behind this is a lawyer specializing in traffic cases.

Re: Virginia Laws: Stiff Fines added July 1st
It shouldnt matter for good drivers but the fines are excessive. I can't wait to see the reaction by citizens in a couple months when they all start getting decked 1k for driving across a parking lot.
