Glad Landry has signed but Taylor has to be pissed as hell. But it's his own fault for signing a bad deal.

Wouldn't it be smarter to have two great CB's, DE's, WR's, etc... vs. the safety position? I still can't believe we drafted this guy instead of a D-Lineman. I think it'll set our franchise back years. When we DID draft him, I was positive that Gibbs had a veteran DE in the works - but so far nothing.

WTF are we thinking? Am I the only one nervous about this move?

Ok - that said, I want to be optimistic about this season - so I won't bring it up again...
See, I kind of disagree with you here. I don't think, specifically in GW's defense, that safeties are a lesser important position.

He thrives off of the safeties blitzing, and dies by the safeties not being able to cover the pass. Look what happened last year with AA. If you read an article not too long ago about how offenses have begun to figure out the cover-2, it implies GW has to do something to correct it... ie, draft a safety.

A huge problem was safeties becoming baited into the run, and getting burned on the PA. (Williams: Offenses Have Uncovered the Cover-2 - washingtonpost.com)

I think this is a good signing, and a good draft pick given the options we had. I would have preferred a DE, but at the 6 spot, he was clearly the best choice.

Re: ESPN: LaRon Landry signs!!!!

as much as i hate to say this, if Landry turns into the player we think he will, it might mean the end of Taylor in Washington. i agree with AJFC, too much money on that position

Working all through the day Sunday, the Washington Redskins were finally able to strike an agreement early Monday morning with first-round choice LaRon Landry of LSU, the sixth player selected overall in this year's draft.

The deal, negotiated by agent Joel Segal, came just shy of 1 a.m. Monday, and will be signed later in the day after both sides review the final document.

The five-year contract has a maximum value of $41.5 million and it includes $17.5 million in guarantees.

A four-time all-SEC defender, Landry was universally regarded as the top safety in the 2007 draft and among the best prospects at the position in the last several years. He is one of only a handful of safeties ever chosen among the top 10 players in the modern-era draft, and joins teammate Sean Taylor, the Redskins' top pick in 2004, in that distinction
very nice to hear

What's even better is that Landry was PUSHING his agent to get the deal done.

Well, going off of what was posted here, 22 million of the contract is incentive laced...last I checked incentive money doesn't count towards the cap. So the salary is cheap for a player of his alleged caliber.

Man, I'm no capoligist but, that sounds like a huge contract for a rookie. I hope that it doesn't hurt our team's cap in the long run.

Well, 18+7.2mil = 25.2 mil over 7 years.
That would average 3.6 mil a year if it was a straight contract...which I doubt since all contracts are back loaded. So he will likely be costing us 1.5ish towards the cap this year. 2.5ish next year.
He won't be a problem until year 5 or 6.

But he did

Redskins' Taylor Sacks Agents (washingtonpost.com)

"Washington Redskins rookie safety Sean Taylor, whose brief NFL career has been a mini-soap opera, has added his latest twist. Taylor, the fifth overall pick in this year's draft, has fired agents Eugene Mato and Jeff Moorad, stemming from unhappiness over his contract, and will rehire Drew Rosenhaus, according to sources with knowledge of the developments."

no way you put thought into what you said. first of all safety might be one of if not the most important position on a defense, esspecially in todays game where passing is so stressed.....they call the coverages every play much like oline men do when you see them pointing and talking. another thing they add is the style in which the guys in front of them can play much more aggressive. but i am not gonna sit here and argue about why safety is important cause there are hundreds esspecially in todays style game. but see you can say the same things about every position.......hey we only need on good pass rushing end and the other a run stopper why paying them both....corners we only need one shutdown corner and another corner who can just get by. all of it is false you put the best players on the field that you can and it doesnt matter position...thats why we didnt draft dline cause landry was a better player than the dlineman available......dont jump on the media bandwagon usually its wrong.
