Re: I got mugged
Yeah so monkeys are crazy in India. They are everywhere, streets, rooftops, etc. The monkeys jacked my veggies. There are fruit and vegetable dealers that come by your neighborhood trying to sell you stuff. So I bought a couple for the house we were staying at, and right before I entered the door a monkey jumped in front of me and grabbed all the shit from my hands and ran.
It was scary as hell.

Re: I got mugged
Damn, sorry to hear about that Hooskins, and glad to hear your ok.
I went to school in NE D.C. for a year, and yeah... rule number one is never walk alone at night. A buddy of mine got pistol whipped literally less than a quarter mile from the dorms. He was alone, and it was 2:00am and he was drunk as well. Pretty much every crime report they would post up on the walls dealt with people, alone, and at night. I know one thing is for sure, you'll never be walking alone again on that route.

Re: I got mugged
I don't know man, I would definitely file charges. Irk his family? Come on, the guy is a criminal and he should be accountable for his actions. You not filing changers will only result in him doing something similar in the future. As for him being affiliated with a gang, I doubt it and if he is so what? You can't live your life in fear and you certainly shouldn't make decisions like this out of fear.

Re: I got mugged
I guess it seems to be an irrational fear for you guys but I am a college student away from home, in a city that is not too safe. All you guys are much older can afford things such as a security system, frequent taxi rides home when drunk etc. I am a broke college student and I have to walk through these areas.
I dont know, I guess I should speak to some kind of free legal service in this area to get more of an idea of what I should do.

Re: I got mugged
Thanks everyone, again. I appreciate you guys hearing me out. So I just decided today that I will not follow up on charges. I am going to call the police department tomorrow and ask them not to pursue this case. I really didn't like the whole incident and I don't want to relive it through the case, court, facing the defendant, defense lawyers, etc. I also plan on living in this area for another school year, and I dont want to potentially irk his family and/or a gang he may possibly be affiliated with. The possible time he would be facing would be 20 years so I am sure that isn't a time period any family and friends would like.

Re: I got mugged
man most important thing is that you are OK. No need to be embarrassed in anyway. Fighting back would be dumb as shit seeing you were drunk. You did the right thing.
Being in college park we have to worry about this stuff when we go out. Its not fun to worry about and it sucks walking through an area when you sure as hell know you shouldn't be. The other week someone got robbed on our campus mall. That is in the f...ing middle of campus. MOst of the muggings happen a few miles off campus and if you are out there you seriously probably will be robbed if you are alone. Being that we have muggings every once in a while the school sends out messages where they are and stuff and the description. No one is ever found. It is scary when you hear a gun is involved. Last year there was a saturday night where a group of high schoolers from the area went around robbing quite a few people. The police here cracked down on their ass. Every f...ing street corner was full of cops. They found 4 of them who used fake guns in the robberies. I was going from one place to another that night and we were in a group of like 25 people. Other than that i never hear of anyone getting caught after the incidents . One of my friends carries a knife on him when going out to shady places. I tell him that if he uses that thing, he will be the one that is killed. I mean he is a pretty big guy but he doesn't have the mindset that these loonies have. They prey on people and beat the shit out of them for 40 bucks. They can easily kill you if you put them in a position to. However, they don't want to hurt you really. Be cooperative and they will be done in a minute. Its not worth 100 bucks. Last night i was about 5 miles off campus. That was not a real good idea. It was shady as hell. My friend and I got a ride back with some girls and were gentlemen and walked them home after we parked. The thing is you can get robbed walking back on campus after you park at 3 AM. Staying in groups is key. Also run across a area if you are really sketched out. Good exercise and who the hell is going to rob a guy that is already running. They are looking for drunk people that can't barely stand. |

He was asking for info, because they want to pursue this case. They have cameras in the garage and they could find this guy. Only problem is what if he is in a gang, I dont know where he lives and what he does. I could be putting myself in a lot more danger than just letting this whole thing go. The detective said if caught he could get 20 years+. That is crazy, but I dont know if I would pursue that.

Re: I got mugged
Damn hoo that sounds like it really sucks. You did the right thing by not fighting back though, there's no telling if he had another weapon on him and since he was willing to rob you in the first place he probably would've been willing to go much further than that. Thankfully you got out of there alive with just a few bruises and less money. If you do decide to take self defense classes it probably won't help if you're inebriated. Just try to get through shady areas as quickly as possible, and listen to your gut instincts.
