Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

I don't know how you're going to make Briggs work. By signing him your either saying that your switching to a 3-4 or you're giving up on Washington or Rocky.

As I said in another thread the front office needs to rely on its ability to identify good players in the draft. They've done an excellent job with the picks they have had and not capitalizing on that ability is a huge waste.

What about Blades? He was a tackling machine at Pittsburgh. Hopefully he'll learn from Fletcher and be ready to take over in 09. Is Rocky already 28 going into his 3rd year? That doesn't sound right. Anyhow I think we're fine with those two guys and we'll have to get somebody for Washington, either throught the draft or FA. But whatever we do let's not OVERPAY for Briggs. I just don't see him worth the $ he's going to ask for. He's a nice player but I didn't see him sacking the QB very often.

Rule of thumb. If you have a video of yourself doing something cool on YouTube! you deserve a shot.

YouTube - Blades hit in louisville game

However yeah, I'd like to give Blades a shot. I really hope the front office stays away from what I like to call Madden tactics. Besides we're already strapped for cap room this year. Right now I'm hoping for

- Hacket at WR
- Smiley at Guard
- Florance at CB
- DE, DT, and OL in the draft.

WE need to pick up Rod Coleman but the Bucs have shown interest in him and he was cut from the Falcons but just because of his cap number...

The bucs are singing up everyone and its crap, we need to grab someone like Coleman cus hes the HIGH motor DT we need. one gapper.

Briggs will be 28 during the 2008 season, and that was my point, that we wouldn't have very much youth at LB. If we signed Briggs, we'd probably be running Marcus (who is only 30) out of town. Anyway, the Briggs signing doesn't look plausible right now.

I don't know about Blades. He might develop, but I think it's best to count on him/Rocky as one player...If Blades does develop, then we can let Rocky walk after his RFA year (2009).

Sounds like Briggs to the 49ers is pretty much a done deal.

Why would we do that? Blades' natural position is MLB & if he develops he'd take Fletcher's spot in a year or two. Rocky is a weak side olb.

I can only see letting him walk if he's still injured or asking way too much.

I have to assume that GTripp was referring to Rocky's higher risk of injury.

The 'can' should be emphasized in my prior post.

ACL injuries tend to hamper performance, and if Rocky can't develop over the next two years because of it, it would be hard to justify giving him an extension.

Either way, Blades gives the team options, but I doubt he will ever start at MLB. Probably too much responsibility for him, even if it was his college position, but I guess that's what we said about Pierce too.

Everything I'm hearing has Samuel going to Philly- 5 years $50 million. He and Lito make a pretty formidable tandem.

Yeah, PFT is reporting the deal to be worth $47.2M over 5 years, averaging around $9.5M a year.
