Re: Redskins Add New Punter

You guys are bitching about a 6th rounder that didn't pan out but not complaining about two second rounders that have hardley seen action. What say you about that?

Thomas is at least seeing some playing time. Kelly has been injured, not much to say there. Neither of those guys are killing us on the field the way Brooks was.

I know this is a punter thread, but I gotta disagree. Kelly was initially projected as a mid to possibly top 10 1st round pick. Yes he had one slow 40 time that hurt his stock, but his biggest red-flag all along was knee issues. And since we drafted him, he's had that same knee operated on and subsequently drained at least twice. He's contributed zero because of a pre-existing issue we were well aware of when choosing him. He's not killing us on the field because he can't manage to get into uniform come Sundays. Sure we can't label this a bust yet, but it has all the early makings of an awful pick in my opinion.

As far as Brooks, two tears in a bucket. I agree that we should have used a 6th round pick elsewhere and signed him as UDFA, but whatever.

Re: Redskins Add New Punter

Yeah, Frost is not laughing...he's about to get cut by Green Bay, too.

Brooks was a waste of a pick, but not a high pick, so the waste was limited.

In VC's defense (a position I don't always occupy), if Brooks had panned out, it would have been great. An excellent punter is a real weapon when it comes to the field position game. It is a shame that Brooks was a gamble lost. And yes, we might have been able to sign him for free without losing a draft choice, but someone else may have scooped up the Ray Guy award winner first.

Given how solid this year's draft is looking from top to bottom I don't know how you are going to complain about one guy not working out.

I remember Danny Wuerfel or whatever his name doing a kick off once. Maybe he's interested?

Re: Redskins Add New Punter

does it count as irony to say VC's decision to draft a punter in the 6th round was terrible, and especially because VC really should have drafted someone(to be named later) because then VC would have proven how smart he was...

Please it was a 6th round choice, probably 75% or more have already been cut.

I thought that it would take some painful time to replace #21. Horton is not the same as 21, of course, but happily he proved me wrong about the pain.

Re: Redskins Add New Punter

Why is this such a big deal? We all knew it was coming after Sunday's game. Brooks didn't pan out, and he was a sixth round pick. So far our draft isn't looking that bad so give it a rest. As for Plackemeier, I think he's at least average which is more than we can say for Brooks, so we're not in a worse position than we were before. And besides if Plackemeier pans out (not saying he will, just saying he's young and he's gonna have some time to give it a shot) than it won't be an issue at all.

Unfortunately I disagree. Kelly, Thomas, and Davis have done next to nothing. Reinhart hasn't dressed for a game yet. Brooks was cut. Tryon has looked poor. Rob Jackson may pan out but hasn't really done anything, nor has Kareem Moore. Colt Brennan was a good pick I think, and Horton is obviously a stud and a steal. But I wouldn't say we had a good draft by any means. Hopefully they prove me wrong. Pass catchers usually take a while to develop, so I'm not ready to write off any of our top 3 picks.

I'm a bit more optimistic than you are about our second round picks apparantly. I didn't expect Thomas/Kelly to contribute much in their first year, in fact I don't expect them to make a huge contribution until they are in their third, or possibly second (small chance of that at this point though). Davis doesn't look to pan out this year, I guess he's just stuck in a numbers battle because coaches feel more comfortable with Yoder right now and Davis hasn't sufficiently progressed to earn a lot of playing time right now. Tryon has sucked in the small time he's seen, but I haven't quite given up on him yet (he hasn't completely sucked like 90% of the time like Brooks), Brooks failed but Horton was a steal so they pretty much cancel each other out, Brennan has looked like a good pick so far, and Rob Jackson hasn't proven much yet (But the fact that he's still on the roster being that he was a 7th round pick has given me a sliver of hope for him, but it ain't much). So overall I don't think it was that bad of a draft class, and I think it's too early to write it off at this point.

I think Thomas hasn't been too bad. has had some key receptions, and sure had penalties, but cant expect tons bc we already have Thrash, ARE and Moss.

Re: Redskins Add New Punter

still a great draft... brooks had the college career to do well, but maybe he's just not ready yet.

plackemeier was also an insane college prospect... hopefully he goes from bleh to great in short order, but it's probably just a modest improvement.
