SHANAHAN HAS SOMETHING UP HIS SLEEVE?

The immediate speculation in some league circles when word broke of the termination of long-time Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is that Shanahan has something else cooking, and that he forced his firing by refusing to agree to changes that owner Pat Bowlen wants to make.
According to Jeff Legwold of the Rocky Mountain News, part of that speculation is right on the money.
Per Legwold, Shanahan was fired because he refused to fire defensive coordinator Bob Slowik, whose unit surrendered 52 points in a Week Seventeen loss to the Chargers.
Said Bowlen, in a release issued by the team: “After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned.
“I appreciate the 21 years that Mike Shanahan has given to the organization as an assistant and head coach, and the two Super Bowl wins in that time. His contributions hold a special place in Broncos history.”
So if Shanahan wanted to get out of town because he has something else cooking, what might it be?
Believe it or not, there’s speculation that Shanahan is trying to position himself for the Chargers job.
What’s that, you say? The Chargers are in the playoffs and they’ve made it clear that Norv Turner is coming back as head coach?
That was our reaction, too. But a highly-placed league source suspects that something is happening with Shanahan and San Diego.
In our book, it’s almost as unlikely as Shanahan coaching the Raiders. But we’ll continue to keep our eyes peeled on this one.
I wonder who sells him his Pineapple Express.

Re: Shanahan out in Denver

I'd be interested to know if Shanahan discussed staying on as a head coach while surrendering his GM powers, a la Holmgren a few years ago. While his game management is second to none, failure is not a strong enough word to describe his personnel decisions of the last several seasons, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

If Cowher comes back this year it will be for this job, mark it down.

If I'm correct he was under contract and if he had talks with Okland then he and Okland have broken league rules of tampering. I also would think that if that was true he would loose the 23 million still left on his contract with the Bronco's.

^To be honest I'm supprised Jacksonville is still keeping their HC. I thought his job was on the bubble last yr?

I would think Oakland would keep their coach only 'cause it seems he has a hell of a time coaxing any coach to take over his team. but we are talking about Al Davis.

Al still owes him money and vows to never pay him, just like Kiffin.

He does have a relationship with Jones, they were speculating this morning on ESPN radio that he could end up there. I wouldn't put it past Jones despite what he's saying about keeping Phillips.

Yeah, he'll keep Phillips as his DC. Wasn't Phillips Shanahan's DC in Denver?

I hope this isn't true. Phillips is a wonderful HC for the Cowgirls. :cool-smil

Re: Shanahan out in Denver

The last thing we need is Shanahan in Dallas! I am not a kneejerk reaction guy...but if Shanahan is in play the skins need to fire Zorn and get him at all costs. How can they let him walk in to Dallas? And then if Zorn flops next year which he probably will with this roster we are left needing a coach and all the proven ones are no longer available...

Relax!! Shanahan won 2 SB with Elway, what has he done since? All this guys are over rated, look at Atlanta's case they hired Mike Smith. Who the hell was he before? A no name coach who can obviously coach, there are some folks out there that given the chance can be successful. Don't panic.

First of all, we have no idea what coaches will be on the market after next season. Shanahan is case in point. If you could have made a list of the 5 coaches LEAST likely to be fired after 2008, he probably would have been on it.

Secondly, all reports seem to point to Cowher NOT coaching at all in 2009, especially since he just extended his CBS contract one more year. So if Zorn does flop, I'm sure Danny will offer the Chin a billion dollars.

Third, it would be a pretty lame move to panic and get Shanahan just to keep Dallas from signing him.
