Prior to that, I'm sure the cop was just reacting to the situation and following what his training and experience had taught him. I don't think any of us (unless we've had the experience, and I haven't) can say how the cop should've reacted initially. But I think common sense should have told him to let Moat go once the nurses from the hospital came to the parking lot to explain the situation.
I was a Military Policeman for 5 years, 91-96, not the same as a Texas street cop by any means, but I know that if I am in that situation, the factors I pointed to earlier all should have given this man a clue. And in 3yrs on the job, I am also positive he has had his share of traffic stops, dealing with unruly drivers, etc, and the video, after the women leave, shows Moats was behaving well for a grieving man. Sorry, no pass whatsoever from me on this one.

I didn't read your previous post but thanks for your input. I know it's easy to criticize (and in this case rightfully so, but it's better to hear it from an experienced perspective.

Hell, even escort the driver into the hospital to confirm the story but to detain him and threaten him with jail and say 'I don't care' when he said that his mother in law is dying is just inexcusable.

As for the racial undertones, I'm certainly not going to dismiss it and would lean towards he wasn't given any benefit of the doubt based on that factor. I just don't want to see Jesse and Rev. Al holding a press conference on the hospital lawn.

Could not have said it any better.

The video was very disturbing and as someone else mentioned, if that was me it would've turned out pretty bad. I would've went to jail and probably resisted arrest. I give a lot of credit to Moats for being as cool as he was. But the officer was just a plain out 100% asshole. Why did he continue to talk all that BS once the nurse came out? Simply no reason to act like that. None what so ever and he should be suspended WITHOUT PAY.

Re: Ryan Moats and the DPD

I'm not defending anyone either, but it is SOP (standard operating procedures) that after someone refuses to pull over, and then seems to run, exit the car, or makes any move deemed dangerous that a higher level of force is required.

I have a huge freaking problem with the cop though.

1. If I'm going to run from the cops, and blow through a stop light, I certainly wouldn't have had my hazards on.
2. If a chase ends in the emergency room of a hospital, something should have clicked that there might be a medical emergency in the car.

(for those of you that didn't see the video with sound)
3. After everything settled down, and the cop was writing the ticket a nurse came outside and told him that her mother was in the hospital and was dying "right now". His reply was, "I'm almost done here".

Cop should be fired, and the city should find something to try and show some sympathy to the wife. This is a ****ed up situation, and I would have probably took a bullet to the back. If my mother (God forbid) was dying, and the hospital said I needed to be there fast, I wouldn't have stopped when the cop drew his weapon.

Since when do you go to jail for an illegal u turn and not having proof of insurance? Yeah this guy sounds like he got his ass beat multiple times when he was younger and is taking it out on the world.

LMAO, going after footballers and their families. No wonder he's always clutching his holster.

You kind of have no choice but to be cool if an officer has a pistol pointed at you.
