Sorry to hear about it Daseal. Once you talk to a Pro and get some lessons lined up and he makes suggestions equipment wise, check out Play It Again Sports, Golfdom, or any other place (brick and mortar or online) that sells used equipment. A lot of times the used stuff is immaculate and has been used maybe once or twice before the user sells it to buy something else. No reason to pay full price for brand new equipment when gently used stuff works just as well.

As BD points out, there are some great deals in used. I regularly browse Ebay looking for...whatever. There are some crazy deals on "Mint" used, and New gear of all golfing descriptions.

That sucks. I agree with others that you can find some nice used clubs for a great deal. Its call sticker shock. See people try out a new set of irons or driver and they hit them so good they buy them. Then when they get to the course remove the sticker price they are shock at how bad they now hit the clubs. After you have found some clubs and had some lessons its a good idea to have the clubs fitted for uyour swing which most people never do. What it does is a guy watches you set up with eash club and bends the head so it lies flat on the ground for your stance. If you watch most people have the tow of their club up higher then the heal of the club and it makes hitting the ball that much harder. Don't get them fitted if you buy a cheap starter set and wait until you buy irons worth spending the extra money. I think it cost me like $10 per iron to have them fitted and not all of them will need adjusting.

Thanks for the advice guys, maybe we can have a TWP tourny some day. I'm really excited. Any hints on places I can practice (probably just driving/putting) during the winter in the NoVA area? What should I expect to pay for used starter clubs? Just so I have an idea.

There is a Driving Range just off of the Dale BLVD exit (heading East) in Dale City. I believe that they have greens to putt and chip on too. That might be further than you want to travel though. There are tons of courses in Fairfax, just google some.

Just about all golf course have a driving rang and a putting to practice. The driving rang will cost about $5 to $8 for a bucket of balls and the putting green is free to use. I'd call your local course and talk to the pro about lessons because you really only need one golf club to start off and he will have something you can use. Then pick his brain about a good starter set and he might even have some used clubs to sell. Just let the pro know that you want to learn and your starting off with nothing and would like his help with leassons. Just be careful and don't let them sell you a new exspensive set of clubs before you even know how or if you want to keep playing golf. There are plenty of starter sets out there under $300 so keep that in mind or a better used set like the irons I linked.

I shot a round with Doug Nettles yesterday. He shot an 84. Pretty damn good golfer and in pretty good shape too. Yesterday my irons were on fire but I couldn't hit shit off of the tee until the 15th hole. On hole 15 I launched a 315 yard drive on a 500+ yard par 5 and he asked me "Where has that been all day". Needless to say my irons took a crap after that and I am still trying to break 100. I had so many wasted short puts it was redonkulous. In the end I shot a 102.

If you have not had any you really should go take some leasons. I play with so many people who play allot of golf but I beat them about 99.99% of the time because I take leasons. There is a reason that pros. have coaches and work on their swing all the time and they are pros. I played Friday and had an 82 and that was with a new set of irons that I was using for the first time. I got a set of Taylor made R9 that I really like but now I have to adjust to the distance I picked up with the new clubs.

I think that I am going to finally break down and do that. I have seen drastic improvment over the years but this year it seems as if I have hit a wall.

Scoring takes place from within 60 yards from the hole. Head to the park or an open field and practice chipping and pitching to a spot over and over. Try to visualize where the ball will roll once it lands.

If you're shooting 95-100, doing this can take you to 88-92 in pretty quick fashion. It's more important to be good around the greens than it is off the tee.

In general I agree with you however my problems ar stemming from poor 1st or second shots and poor putting. I am actually above average around the green.

If my first shot is good, then I usually tank the second or vice versa. I flat out have to take too many penalties. Stringing two shots together is my nemises. I average 1 additional shot per hole trying to recover or having to drop from a bad shot.

I also have difficulty hitting long irons and woods off of the fairway. I will lay up in many situations when I should be able to get on with a wood or long iron.
