I don't consider this a tantrum...it seems more like a move of self-control. It would have been an ugly scene. I really hate to say it, but I'm to the point where I think Zorn should be removed immediately. His playcalling never improves, he's not learning from mistakes and he's just in over his head. Personally, I love the guy. He's a great person. However, he just isn't ready for a role of leadership without experience. (seems popular for D.C. right now though) We should install a new coach this week and not wait for Zorn's playcalls to fail against the Eagles before the bye week. Let the new coach rally the guys and maybe we can show up against Philly. It's painful to admit it won't work. I had all of the optimism for Zorn that he's get it. Apparently, that 6-2 start last season was leftover from Coach Gibbs.

Re: Gray, Smith likely interim coach choices
Orakpo was the right pick. He's to good to pass up and he's already on track to compete for DROY. However we dug our grave before that, by not using a second round pick on an O-lineman in 2008 and drafting a CB in the third round in 2009. Plus getting only one free agent O-lineman that made the team didn't help either. We would be in much better shape if we had just brought in Ray Willis. I'm assuming we're going to have a top 10 pick next year so I'm thinking that the first pick will probably be a QB, either Colt or Bradford. After that though we should use our next two picks on OL. Preferably a Tackle in the second round and a quality center in the third.

Well look what it did for the 49er's as they started turning things around at the end of last year.

Re: Gray, Smith likely interim coach choices
Either Coach would be good if you ask me. Zorn is lost. I like the idea of Danny Smith. After watching him try to school Zorn on the side-line he appears to know a lot more about play calling. I don't know much about Gray, but from what I see he appears to be no nonsense too. Either way Zorn is done.

Re: Gray, Smith likely interim coach choices
Could be as early as next Monday if the Skins decide to give another winless team their first victory of the season, but I would imagine that Zorn's done by the final whistle of the Eagles game. I'd imagine Sherman Smith would be out as well, with Sherm Lewis taking over as offensive coordinator. Gray or Smith can lead the sinking ship into the depths of the NFC East basement.
The only way the Redskins will ever completely start over is if Snyder decides to put his massively large ego aside and hire a football man to be his GM and let said GM call the shots. Until that day happens (I've yet to hear about hell freezing over or see pigs flying), it really won't matter who Snyder pays to be head coach, they will be limited by what the Front Office wants to do.

Re: Gray, Smith likely interim coach choices
I can't speak for him, but I was thinking someone who would draft a tackle or a guard that can start and finish a game.

Re: Gray, Smith likely interim coach choices
It's not Snyder's football acumen that I detest - I am with Smoot (I think) in that I believe our talent aquisition has not been that bad with the glaring example of the OLine.
It's Snyder's favoritism and pettiness that I think muddle the pie. If I'm the new coach, I would say - "Mr. Snyder, if I find my guys hanging out with you, calling you, or in any way interacting with you in a way I have not approved, I will cut them. Then you can pal around with them all you like. I don't care if its the QB you personally recruited during the FA signing period. Consider it a 'non-fraternization policy'. You want to speak to the team on occasion - hey fine as long as it is to the ENTIRE team and not just one or two guys." Obviously, Snyder would never go for that.

Re: Gray, Smith likely interim coach choices
Logic would say that Smith or Gray should be candidates until seasons end. But.....
Gray is a defensive coach and the defense is doing rather well right now. Smith is an offensive coach has only coached at the college level prior to here. Plus some say he does not know Zorn's offense well enough to call plays. If a change is made logically it would be made at the break except for the fact that after the Detroit game DS ran/flew to Denver to speak with Shanahan. Reports were he was pissed off that we lost. If this is even remotely true then the best candidate to relieve Zorn would be a WCO guru who also studied under Holmgren. Which is why I think Gruden is DS's main choice. He's hoping that there will not be much of a scheme change and that the system can be tweeked enough to start winning games. Holmgren would be a good choice as well. I know the NFC East has to be a major want on any Coach's wish list due to it being so hard but if I were Gruden I would also tell DS I would take the job so long as Cerrato is gone. Force DS to change up the front office as it should be or have fun trying to pick up any decent HC. Let him realize no one wants to work with Cerrato and no one wants him meddling with what they are trying to accomplish. |

Re: Gray, Smith likely interim coach choices
How about someone that if available at least one of the the other 31 teams would want to hire?

The favoritism element is not exclusive to the Redskins. So I don't expect that would change. What we really need is more restraint. I think Snyder (and I mentioned this in another thread) will do whatever it takes to get whoever he wants, Vinny wants, Zorn wants, Blache wants, Bugel wants, Gibbs wants, Saunders wants, and so on. And to an extent that's great, you want an owner who will not hesitate to get you what you need. At the same time though, someone has to be the "dad" here and be the disciplinarian. Then maybe this time next year we wouldn't be wondering how come Campbell, Duckett, Taylor, and Lloyd aren't here anymore...and neither are a first, second, three thirds, and fourth and a sixth
