Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

Given their close relationship I think this rumor holds some water.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

Joe is nobody's fool. His success record is legendary. Do I think he was overwhelmed upon his return to the NFL......yes. BUT Joe has undoubtedly had much time to evaluate, and assess the triumph's, and failures in Joe2. He will NO DOUBT work from that perspective.
Who rallies the team better?
WHO is better prepared to successfully deal with DanFinger? WHO has a better chance of getting Dan into the correct "role" for the team than Joe?
How much fun would it be with NO salary cap?
MAN, I hope this is true.....
To tell the truth, I gasped when I read the thread!
WHO would give more to try to get this francise back on track. I am sure he feels to some degree a sense of failure in his Joe2 stint. The type of man he is....he would probably like to fix that.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

Based on this rumor it sounds as if Gibbs would be in a team president type of role, he would hire a GM and help hire a coach. I don't think he would be heavily involved in personnel decisions, that's what the GM is for.

Say what you want about Gibbs 2.0, the guy knows people, he knows how to build relationships, and he values character. Basically the complete opposite of Vinny for the most part. Gibbs would add instant credibility back to the front office and give us a real shot at getting some quality football people in here.

Well said. This is a small point, but from Snyder's perspective, this move would also allow someone else to fire Cerrato, thereby "preserving" their friendship. If i'm not mistaken, didn't Gibbs want to fire Vinny at one point or am i mis-remembering?

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

Is there anything else that could happen this week?

Love JG's as a team builder however, i don't know he is in tune to todays NFL. He knows old coaches, old personell guys. I'm not sure this is the route to go. He threw away draft picks as fast as VC does on crappy players. Not sure about this one. Hmmm.

No I don't know for sure but I am just assuming that Gibbs of all people had the clout to hire or fire anyone he wanted to. My guess is that Gibbs knew Dan liked Vinny and he decided to let him stay as long as Gibbs himself had final say. Don't get me wrong...I LOVE Joe Gibbs and I don't want his good name ruined anymore by Dan Snyder if in fact this is just a publicity stunt to get the fans off Snyders back.

And Vinny in any role no matter how insignificant is unaccebtable...You can not sell real change to the fan base with Vinny still there.

However, if this is truely a Parcels/Miami type situation where Dan is OUT...Vinny is OUT...and Gibbs hires a GM & a Head coach then I support it.

meh, I think he went along with the program more than anything, and Vinny's role under him wasn't as significant as it is now.

After I calmed myself down I actually read the article. I agree that he could work out in the Bill Parcells type of role. For this to work though he has to hire a GM and a head coach. Now I am kinda looking forward to this. You are correct he is a good people person.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

If Gibbs comes back it just total proves that Dan Snyder knows nothing about football. Its very similar to Vinny taking play-calling away for Zorn this week. It emascualted Zorn. If Dan hires Gibbs again, he is kind of emasculating himself when it comes to football. He will be finally admiting what we all know, and that is he does not know how to own an NFL franchise. It would also mean that some day when Gibbs steps down again, that Snyder has to continue to hire GM's or Presidents or whatever you want to call the guy that actual runs the team, because it can never be Snyder again.

Well, hopefully, if this happened, when gibbs stepped down again, we would have had a successful GM and Head Coach in place for several years. I think that if Snyder sees success under a GM, and compares that to the disaster thats occurred over the past decade, he'd stick with the GM/HC model for years to come. Additionally, good GMs often stay in place for decades, even when head coaches come and go. So if Gibbs made a good GM hire, then hopefully the guy would be around for a long, long time. I'd love to get Ghris Polian in here. He's learned from the best and if he struggled, could always fall back on his dad for guidance.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

Interesting reading from Hog Heaven:

Executive coach and consultant Scott Eblin listed nine management blunders by Snyder in running the Washington Redskins organization for his story on businessmanagementdaily.com.

Among Snyder’s blunders:

Live in the past, The Redskins continue to act as if they are a perennial contender and don’t deal with reality
Manage things you don’t know about, Snyder’s front office is not up to the job
Squeese your customers until they bleed, premium price for an inferior product
Hire and fire rapidly, too much churn at the top operational position
Accept no accountability, Snyder and Vinny Cerrato are the only constants in the last 10 years.
Eblin consults on executive leadership and strategy and is the author of The Next Level: What Insiders Know About Executive Success.
[/B][/B]

His litany of Snyder’s flawed approach to running the Redskins is already familiar to sports writers and bloggers who follow the team. It may be revealing to Sunday fans who think all problems can be fixed by swapping players and coaches.

Since Eblin wrote his peice for a business site, I am surprised that he did not suggest a management fix for each blunder to apply to any business. There are management lessons to be learned–what not to do–watching Snyder’s approach. Eblin leaves it to the reader to form conclusions.

The Danny, of course, isn’t running the football side of the Redskins as a business. He bought the team for the fun of running it–to hang out with “the guys,” to cut the next big deal, to associate with wealthy members of the NFL club. Pay him money and he’ll let you watch.

In that, Snyder is playing with fire. Folks don’t give old line, 80 year old sports teams like the Redskins their loyalty. They give them their allegiance. Name another business model where customers wait years to do business with you becasue their deep existing relationship.

Fans on the season ticket waiting list feel an active partnership with the team even though the franchise does not have capacity to seat them.

Fans own the Redskins. Snyder owns the franchise rights to sell to them, along with the property and trademark rights to Washington Redskins. None of that gives him the right to mismanage the team.

Follow the link to Scott Eblin’s story Learning What Not To Do From The Leadership of the Washington Redskins.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

I hope this doesnt happen. If memory serves Gibbs is the guy who assembled most of these under-performing players so some of this mess rests on his shoulders. I think this organization needs to find a way to stop being stuck in the past and trying to recreate the glory days with the same old people.
