Cold weather Super Bowls on the way

The Minnesota Twins manned up and now have an outdoor stadium to play baseball in, even though Minnesota doesn't get warm until June. If they can bundle up and play baseball, then a bunch of execs and VIPs can do the same to watch football the way it was intended.

However, I personally don't care if the Super Bowl is played in a warm weather city or cold weather open air stadium. But, between San Diego, Phoenix, Houston, New Orleans, Miami and Tampa, you have 6 decent cites to rotate the Super Bowl. Hell, you could even throw LA in there once one of the current teams move there.

A lot of folks not only go to the game, but see it as a vacation, like the college bowl crowd does. Do you really want to pay a ton of $ to see an overhyped game and freezing your ass off for an extended weekend or week? Do you want to go to sunny San Diego or freezing Detroit? Phoenix or Buffalo? Miami or Cleveland? Not much of a decision is it.?

My idea was for whoever wins that years SB the game will be played in their stadium the next year.Saints won in 2010 so the Super Dome would get the game in 2011.

It would be a test of how both a dome or a hot weathered team, handle the cold! Of NY or anywhere that is cold weathered.

It probably will work, but it is a big gamble. An outdoor football game in NY in late Jan/early Feb is asking for a potential clusterfuck. NY gets way more snow we do in Detroit due to the lake effect snow from both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Cleveland is the same way, as is Buffalo. Diehard fans probably won't give a shit, but if say Miami makes the SB in 2014, how many folks are going to want to risk getting stranded in a snowstorm at JFK or LaGuardia or have to extend their stay in NY? Cold weather SBs can work, but only in domes in big metro areas that don't get too chilly or have big dumps. Detroit worked because both the Silverdome and Ford Field are domes and the greater Detroit Metro area had a lot of things to do. Green Bay would suck as a SB city as it makes Detroit seem warm, and the snow is worse also. The metro area isn't that big either around GB. INdy could be a nice SB locale, but the city govt better let the local bars/restaurants stay open a lot later than what they are allowed to now!

NYC doesn't get lake effect snow. The average high temp is around 40 for that time of the year. Not quite as cold as you might think.

Upstate NY is a different story.

Yeah, exactly. NYC is like a heat wave compared to us in February...

Either way, I dont really love it, if we made the Super Bowl in that season, it wouldnt be a big deal beacuse we play in the cold, but I'm all about keeping the Super Bowl neutral. The playoffs teams earn that type of an advantage, but if worked out to be like Buffalo vs Arizona or something ilke that, it would greatly favor one team. I just dont like that ...

What if Buffalo played Arizona in a Super Bowl in Arizona? According to a lot of players it's a myth that playing in the warm weather is easy. Especially if you play and practice in cold weather all week and then have to travel to a warm weather location

yeah these guys have been playing in somewhat cold weather for months at that point

Well what type of warm weather? If you're speaking about 100+ degree weather than yeah playing in warm weather isn't easy. However the highest Super Bowl temperature in recent memory was back in 2003 when the Buc's played the Raiders in San Diego at 81 degrees and before that it was 84 degrees when the Skins lost to the Raiders back in the 80's. Most of the other Super Bowls seem to be around 67 degrees at kickoff which to me seems like ideal weather for any outdoor sport.

That being said DC would be great as a cold weather SB site. Shitloads to do in DC, big dumps are rare, and your base temp is a lot nice than what the Rust Belt has. Folks from down south wouldn't mind coming up to a mild winter, compared to the frigid winters up here. Folks from up north wouldn't mind either as they would escape Frigidia!!!!!
