What works for me is checking the time on a clock or watch. During the day whenever you look at a clock, just ask yourself if you're dreaming. In a dream when you look at the time, look away, and then look back, chances are the time will be different or the numbers will be all out of order.
Interesting. So is this how you train your cognitive skills to respond during a dream?

Okay, here's some far out stuff since we're talking about it. Do you guys fly in your dreams a lot or at all? And like land in weird places, times in history or the future?

Yeah there are some other techniques too like keeping a dream journal. It's just all about being more aware and knowing what to look for in order to realize a dream vs. reality.

I used to fly all the time, haven't done that in a long time though. Hmm, I wonder why.

Re: Dreams

i wish I could lucid dream. Sometimes I know I'm dreaming.. and I try to control it and make things go in the way I want them to.. But it never works.

This was back in college. So I have this dream that I'm standing on one side of the road and my friend is on the other side. I see her and wave to her. She waves back, and starts crossing the street. Suddenly she's hit by a bus! She flies in the air and lands hard on the asphalt. But then she gets up and appears unscathed.

So anyway, I wake up, and think to myself wow what a crazy dream I'll have to tell this girl all about it when I see her. We'll probably have a good laugh over it. So the whole day passes and I still haven't seen her, and no one else knew about the dream.

It's early in the evening now and I'm walking back to my dorm. I then see her running toward me in a frenzy. "Oh my God! I'm so glad you're ok. I had the craziest dream last night. I had this dream where you were on the other side of the street and you waved to me. I waved back. Then you started crossing the street and were hit by a bus!"

Woah!
fuuuuck

we didn't have the good stuff when I was that age

That's the way I am. It seems like as soon as I realize I'm dreaming the dream itself completely shifts, like I just changed the channel or something and everything starts to go fuzzy. I guess it could be that my conscious mind starts into interfere with my subconscious and I sort of lose my train of thought.

Re: Dreams

You guys have some crazy dreams. Mine are never that intense but there's always some huge thing that makes them not realistic, I can't really think of any examples but I'm sure that something will pop up later.

never had the flying thing

sometimes it seems like gravity is much lower though as I'll bounce along slowly.. or one where I was swinging from the power lines and bouncing off of the rock wall along side a road between swings

I had a dream once the mods here had to ban Matty. It was actually pretty ugly. Matty was not just banned but dragged from his house by police with a jacket over his head covering his face and Gmanc was answering questions about the banning to the media. Don't know what he did but I guess it was pretty bad

Re: Dreams

We are all missing the best dreams! WET ONES!

Though to be honest I don't think I have ever truly had one maybe in my early teen years but I have definitely had some good sex ones in the past.

Would it not be great if you could program your dream adventure every night before going to bed?

I also have this thing where dreaming that I'm going to die is super relaxing and comforting, i have no idea why. I'm not suicidal or depressed that I know of, but if I can't fall asleep, I think of dying, usually peacefully laying down in the woods, and it relaxes me so that I can get some rest. I'd love to hear someone explain that one...
I've had that one, it's a very common one. A psychologist once told me it usually stems from frustration in your life.

Other common ones:

- Falling, usually means there's something in your life you don't feel in control of.

- Flying, you're likely happy and pretty stress free.

- In school, but unprepared. Like you haven't studied for a final or you forgot to submit a paper. It's typical of overachievers, people who have a tendency to always feel like you need to be doing more.

I've had all of the above at various times.

Re: Dreams

I could care less about dreams. They mean nothing to me. I was a psychology minor and we had to learn about dreams and it was worthless. It drives me nuts when people tell me about their dreams. You know when someone tells you something that happened to them and when they explain it they realize the situation wasn’t all that funny and they add the disclaimer “you had to be there”? Thats the way i feel about dreams, theyre only meaningful to the person who dreamt them. Unless im in the dream there is no chance i want to hear about it. And odds are im not going to want to hear about the dream even if i was in it, or im going to feel let down when you tell me about a dream that involved me.

I made “deal” once with my ex girlfriend that i would never mention any of my dreams to her and in return i expect the same. She didnt like that very much. Whenever she tried to start blabbering about some dream she had i would say "Hey! remember our deal?!!!???"

Come to think of it listening to people tell me about their dreams is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Re: Dreams

I'm a sleep walker/talker. I do it every night, 90 minutes after I fall asleep. Like clockwork. I do all sorts of crazy things, like take apart ceiling fans (it had a squeak, what can I say?), or cheer on my Redskins while pacing the bedroom floor. The only time I ever remember any of it is when I wake up during it. That puts me in a really weird state. It's like I'm halfway in my dream, and halfway in reality. Very strange, and I don't like it.

One of my best dreams ever came when I was an undergrad. As a CS major, I took a ton of programming classes. I loved them, but they always had large projects. I was never one to work through the night on something like a lot of people did. I valued sleep. One night I went to bed before I had come up with a solution to a particularly difficult problem. During the night, I dreamed about the project and actually came up with a solution in my sleep that worked. It was awesome. I wish I could work more in my sleep.
