Minor squabble of mine but I don't like him in #39. #40 would look tight, or even his old # from Arizona #34 if Westbrook would give it up.

I think if anyone is critical, its got to be on d side of the ball, particularly with coverage.
With the caveat that I did NOT re-watch the tape of the first few drives, I saw specific instances of Trent Williams giving up the bull rush and Jammal Brown getting destroyed in space. I thought Locklear looked good against second teamers.

I did not see specific instances of what other people are saying about Montgomery getting thrown around in the run game, but if it did happen, it's important to remember that he's Will Montgomery. It's been an impressive ascension to starting C of this team, but two years ago, he was a bad backup lineman on one of the worst offensive lines in recent memory. He's a better player than he was then, and he's in a spot more conducive to success on the line, but keep that in mind about Will Montgomery. He wouldn't leave here and go start for any other team.

Like gross. 40 is for like slow guys. 39 says I'm not only fast, but I'm tough to.

Re: Redskins-Steelers (Preseason) Post-game Thoughts

The biggest concern about our OL is that our starting LG, C, and RG all would be backups on any other team (if only because most teams still use man-blocking). And that our tackles still have a ways to go to be as good as our interior.

39 is just an odd # to me. I dig the 40s for backs. Riggo, Stephen Davis, etc.

  1. Sexy Rexy...despite talking shit looked fantastic. I want to see Beck outdo him...lol.
  2. Clemens played will despite not playing in the system for a long.
  3. Tim Hightower...he knows what he is doing. Let's hope we see more downhill cuts than edge runs.
  4. Offensive line unit. I loved how Monty played. Jamal Brown wasn't going as hard as the rest of them...let's hope it's a case of a vet not wanting to play hard in the pre-season and not a vet past his prime.
  5. Play calling. Great job with variation. Good to see us get vertical and use deep drag routs. Those run fakes were awesome to see.
  6. Defensive Line and Linebackers. Great hustle.
  7. TE play. Great blocking and great catches. We're way too deep here. Sellers might be an odd man out if they are serious about converting him to a TE.
  8. I am a huge Austin fan...the guy can play. Can we cut Kelly already?
  9. For a rookie Niles Paul knows how to run routes.

Dislikes:
  1. Our secondary is shit. Our starting corners are shit and our backup safeties are backups for a reason. There were at least 3 great opportunities for TDs the Steelers blew. There is no fcking way anyone can tell me Josh Wilson is a quality starting caliber CB in this league.

Apprehensions:
  1. Karrigan's timid play. His coverage skills are shit. He is very mechanical right now but hopefully more playing time will fix that.
  2. Leonard Hankerson looked like shit out there. He reminds me a lot of Devin Thomas with the way he played out there. Someone better tell him lazy players who play lazily don't last long in this league.
  3. Jim Haslett. I am just not sure if this guy is up to the task of running a first class NFL defense.
  4. Sexy Rex. I am worried he won't take what defenses give him. Davis was wide open on that deep play. You have to go there! No excuse for missing that at all.

I am still worried about the interior - it's just the first preseason game but we're not out of the woods yet
What game were you watching because it certainly wasn't the Redskins vs Steelers last night.

(thanks to Dirtbag for the game film)

So Montgomery vs Hampton was a joke? I think the evidence clearly shows otherwise. You do realize that one play was a SCREEN pass right?

Trent Williams and Jammal Brown are the biggest, quickest, most-physical lineman on the roster. I'm getting a little worried about the constant underachieving with these two. They both have the ability to take elite pass rushers one on one. They were beat too often last year.

As long as they are healthy, I think we'll be fine with them. Something tells me Locklear is going to make at least a couple starts this year, irregardless of injury.

Yeah they were beat last year, but thats in the past. Brown injury and Trent inexperienced. I think we will see improvement.

Locklear pick up was a good one and yeah I think he has the ability to start, ill be surprised if he does.

QB play. Rex is a legit starter as I've often said and Clemmons was a nice surprise considering such a limited time in the offense. Beck might have to show a lot to not be 3rd string.
Helu and Hightower ran well and Hightower looked great in blitz pickups.
Defensive front seven and some actual depth on DLine.
Santana Moss looks 5 years younger.

Dislikes:

ILB depth. Fox had way too missed tackles looking for a knockout instead of a tackle.
Horton looked bad tackling as well.
Hankerson. I was really hoping to avoid the Kelly/Thomas scenario with him but it looks like he's a squad player at best.

Of course it's only 1 preseason game.

Dont let any Hatter(s) tell you different, but dropping 452 yards of offense on the well coach, physical Pittsburg Steelers is no small deal. thats effing awesome. Rex was good.

Defense was great with bringing pressure, everything else on d was ok. Kerrigan can flat out play.

We need to get our safeties healthy immediately. We wont survive with those 2 back ups in coverage. Not gonna work.

I was so pumped up watching our line. This is probably our best line since 05

Re: Redskins-Steelers (Preseason) Post-game Thoughts

The offense looked solid - 450 yards, no turnovers, nearly 40 min. time of possession. But, much like last year, only 1 touchdown vs. 5 FG attempts. We need to get into the end zone more.

Defense also looks much better. Didn't like the four play touchdown drive we gave up, however. We played much better than the Steelers in the first half but were tied at halftime.
