Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
Sellers had his day when he was playing a lead blocker role in the Gibbs offense, but in Shanahan's offense you could tell last year he didn't know who to block in the zone schemes. Missed a lot of assignments, and he's older now so he wasn't as quick to make up for mistakes with quickness. He's gone. Big ups to him for a nice Redskin career.
Young is a threat to block and act as the release valve for Beck or Rex, something any QB could use, especially those who aren't that established. I don't think K Williams makes the roster. I think Helu and Hightower are the locks, it comes down to Torain vs Royster for the last spot. I'd go Royster, he's healthier and clearly makes pass blocking a priority.

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
Young has looked good enough to secure a roster spot over 2 preseason games.
I wouldn't be a fan of ditching Sellers...he is huge and would pay great dividends in short yardage considering our line is finesse...doesn't he play teams too? I do think Young will probably take the starting role and it sure is good to hear that we will be unhappy on cut date regarding our RB's...haven't had that luxury in a while. Hightower is clearly the starter and Helu did great last week, amazing fits for the scheme...outside of those 2, every other tailback is at risk imo. Torain is likely a shanny favorite and Royster is young....both are consistent but not explosive...I bet the plan is to keep Torain as #3 and put Royster on the practice squad....hopefully Royster fumbles a couple of times so no one snags him....he is decent but is he worth a roster spot?...he'd have to explode to prove that to me. Regarding Big Mike...I bet they keep 2 FBs and have Young and him rotate...are there any more roster spots this year due to the new agreement?

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
Well Young isn't exactly a welterweight either at 250, though at the same time I tend to forget that at 275-280 Mike is essentially a 6th Zone Blocking lineman on the field.

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
Torain will definitely get picked up, however I don't really see Royster as a hot commodity outside of DC, at least for now. Whenever I do my final roster these days though I've always put the Skins down for 4 RB's and 1 FB.

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
I like Torain but Royster is the safer bet, I'd go with Royster, same with KW over MS. Although I might take MS over Paulsen, another option is keep Paulsen and if there's an injury we could always bring Sellers back (assuming he isn't signed by another team)...its a toss up!.... either way it'll all come down to the 3rd game.
(i like having tough choices, I can't remember the last camp with so many GOOD options) Last edited by IRISHSKIN24; 08-24-2011 at 12:25 AM. |

We need a MAULER on the team...that is a specialty that I hope the Skins don't overlook. he is NOT a TE and Paulsen is young and solid depth. Funny the Skins are concerned about redzone yet I haven't seen Sellers line up in the backfield to jam it in with a no nonsense back like Royster or Torrain. I'd like to see that in preseason, because we can't rely on stretch plays at the 2 yard line, nor can we depend on our QBs.....A Power Rushing element to the team is ESSENTIAL in the NFC East...I am not sure Shanny had figured that out yet....I say...KEEP BIG MIKE!!

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
I normally don't take pleasure in others misfortune, but I will be smiling from ear to ear when Sellers is cut. I hope to have seen my last image of a 260+ pound man trying to hurdle defenders as if he were in the Olympics. Nice knowin you Big Mike...

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
Sellers was one of my favorite players and will be one of my fav Redskins .... specially since he came back to the team the way he did and really played his ass off for a long time .. he shined with Gibbs no doubt about it, but that damn fumble on a TD drive a few years ago against Bengals starting the downfall .. remember that play ??? I love the guy .. hope he remains a DC staple and gets a TV or Radio job or even coaching, actually I think he'd be a hell of a coach ... As far this RB situation goes, I really don't think Shanny has all of the sudden forgotten how smooth Torrain looked last year ??? Yes he is banged up, that's why we have a SUPER durable RB in Hightower and drafted some solid RB's ...
RBs #1. Hightower #2. Torrain #3. Helu (eventually he will be great, may have to be next year though) #4. ?? FB: #1. Young #2. Williams Sellers is odd man out and so is Royster

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
Right. 5 offensive backs.
And if they need an extra roster spot to start the year, you don't need more than two of our RBs active for any one game. So theoretically, Royster could be on the practice squad and still RB no. 3. It's been done before for Shanahan.

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
If there's only going to be 25 offensive guys, it sure looks like Sellers v. Torain for that last spot. Sellers is just a special teamer and goal line player right now, but I think the organization's hope is that Torain might have some trade value.
I'll be watching tomorrow to see if Stallworth or Niles Paul makes a push for a spot with the receivers. Really, Stallworth's only chance to go against the ones in the preseason will come tomrrow. If he beats Chris Carr a couple times, I might buy his shot at the roster over someone like Austin. Right now, I've seen more out of Armstrong than I've seen out of Stallworth.

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
I just want to give a shout-out to Darrel Young. He's no longer a rising star, he is a star! Most definitly a pro-bowler. I love how he attacks the line and anyone in his way whether it be a DE, LB, or a DB and and how he finishes. What a fantastic FB and really the key to Morris and RG3's success.
Big-ups!

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?
He's having a really nice year. Great find by the FO. We're really developing a nice young core of weapons on offense.
